The caves are the formation of karstic cavities, their origin dating back millions of years. During the Triassic period , large quantities of calcareous mud settled on the fond of the ancient Mediterranean sea, transforming into the calcareous-dolomite marble which at present shelter the caves.

The Balcón de Europa – Balcony of Europe – is situated on a rocky promontory and was formerly a fortress designed to keep out British pirates and privateers. Today it is the focal point of the town, affording magnificent views up and down the coast. Looking left and down you have Calahonda beach and neighbouring coves, followed by Burriana beach and, in the distance, the picturesque village of Maro, site of the impressive Nerja Caves.

Food Scene

Nerja has many restaurants, bars and clubs open until the early hours of the morning, particularly during the summer season, as well as a number of live music venues to suit a variety of ages and tastes and, inevitably, the odd karaoke bar. The main centre of activity, particularly during the summer months, is in and around Plaza Tutti Frutti. At night – and things don’t usually get started until around midnight – it becomes a vibrant heaving mass of humanity with its own charm and character.

Night Life in Nerja is mainly about eating - there are now over 200 restaurants in Nerja. However if late nights are what you are after it can be found beyond Castilla Perez in Antonio Millon and the adjacent Plaza Tutti Frutti. These are wall to wall with bars, many of them with dancing. This part of town doesn't come to life much before midnight and stays open into the small hours.
