Good Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago hot dogs in a retro-diner setting. My friends from high school always make it a point to go to Portillo's when they're in town. They love the authentic taste that they can't get where they live now. I always head over to get a mint cake shake around St. Patrick's day, and who doesn't love their chocolate cake?

Wonderful, rich ice cream selections and some baked goods in a nicely-decorated former streamline-era movie theater. Look for the holes in the wall where movies were projected through. The pizza everyone loves. Your choice of crusts--from deep-dish butter to a thin cracker-type. All good. If you're looking for other classic Chicago pizzas, try Pizzeria Uno--the original deep-dish, or Gino's East--my favorite, with its corn-meal yellow crust. Both on the near-North side of Chicago.

Cool, sleek restaurant with a Pan-Asian menu. Wonderful noodle dishes, salads and skewers with grilled veggies and tasty sauces. It's officially a "small-plate" restaurant, so diners are encouraged to order 2 or more items, but several of the dishes can stand on their own. Unless it's super-busy, you might want to try ordering one thing at a time. Or do what my friend Betty did and order four things and a to-go box. You'll wish you did. Stop in to Rare Bird and Brown Elephant while you're on the block.
