De Rotterdam is an iconic example of urban architecture. The three linked towers are nearly 150 metres high, forming a ‘vertical city’ of high-class flats, a 4-star hotel, offices, shops, restaurants, fitness and parking facilities. At the Rotterdam are two fine restaurants and a bar. When the weather is nice there is a great terrace with a view.

The largest street market of Rotterdam is located in the city centre at Binnenrotte near the Blaak underground station. This weekly market covers the Binnenrotte square from Blaak to shopping street Meent and contains more than 400 stands. Near the Blaak area, you will find fresh produce such as fruit, fish, cheese, vegetables, flowers and candy. At the Rotterdam market square in the vicinity of Meent clothes, smart phone accessoiries, vintage goods, fabrics and souvenirs are offered. In the afternoon this market can be quite crowded, especially during the weekend. On rainy days the street market has a functional shelter by means of plastic covers, so if you're a tall person watch put! You can combine a visit to the Rotterdam street market with a day of shopping in Rotterdam, because the market square is connected to the Meent and Hoogstraat shopping streets. The Euromast observation tower, designed by Rotterdam architect H.A. Maaskant, was constructed in 1960 to mark the second Floriade gardening extravaganza which was being held in Rotterdam. At the time, the Euromast was 100 metres high. In 1970, the Space Tower was added, raising the tower to a height of no less than 185 metres. This made the Euromast Rotterdam s highest building.

This picturesque yacht marina is one of the few parts of the old city that survived the 1940 bombardment of Rotterdam. It has had a remarkable history, both as the departure point from which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed for America, and the birthplace of prominent Dutch maritime hero Piet Hein. The Pelgrimvaderskerk dates back to 1761 and still offers echoes of that historic era. Open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays, the church holds services on Sunday. Delfshaven locals once earned their living by fishing for herring and distilling gin. The historic canal houses now hold cosy shops selling antiques and bric-a-brac, art studios, gin bars, beer breweries and down-to-earth eateries. Historic Delfshaven has always managed to retain its authentic charm, with the old-school grain mill known as De Destilleerketel as a prominent landmark.

Rotterdam City Hall was built in 1914 in a somewhat exuberant Art Deco style. It is nice to walk into the monumental main hall and see the statues. The courtyard is also worth a look. As the City Hall is still in use you are free to enter the public areas and have a look. The other halls will be off limits, unless you can persuade one of the guards to open the showpiece Burgerzaal for you. The City Hall also has a belltower with carillon which is often played, while the roof of the middel tower is made of gold

Kralingen is traditionally known as the chiquer side of Rotterdam. Romantic villa neighbourhoods and elegant lanes dominate the cityscape here. Erasmus University Rotterdam is also located here, however, so the area is home to lots of students – and they keep Kralingen lively! Oostzeedijk boasts lots of popular pubs and restaurants where you can grab a meal for a reasonable price. The Student Hotel, which walks a fine line between hostel and designer boutique hotel, is a beloved meeting point... and a decent place for a cup of coffee or a sandwich. One of the oldest attractions in Kralingen is Arboretum Trompenburg. In addition to the lovely old trees here, these botanic gardens offer beautiful plants and flowers and a charming teahouse.

Architecture aficionados will be astounded by this peninsula. The world's most famous stars of architecture have erected buildings here. Álvaro Siza, Renzo Piano, Francine Houben, Norman Foster – and Rotterdam's own Rem Koolhaas. His soaring De Rotterdam complex is the most striking edifice. The three linked towers are nearly 150 metres high, forming a ‘vertical city’ of high-class flats, a 4-star hotel, offices, shops, restaurants, fitness and parking facilities. Amidst all those gleaming high-rise towers, several buildings still recall an era when throngs of European passengers departed from this spot, heading off to America on steamboats. The Cruise Terminal is one example, where the most majestic cruise liners now drop anchor. Another is the famous Hotel New York, where robust nautical elements still offer echoes of all those migratory continentals. Several old warehouses and a number of newer buildings now house cultural institutes and restaurants. With the arrival of the Nederlands Fotomuseum, the LantarenVenster arthouse cinema and the Luxor Theater, the Kop van Zuid peninsula has become a veritable hotbed of culture.

Midstream in the Nieuwe Maas, a historic island is linked to the rest of the city by a web of bridges. Although Noordereiland is primarily residential, it has attracted a strikingly high percentage of people working in the arts. Consequently, the area is known as Montmartre on the Maas. The Noordereiland is a perfect place for a lovely stroll (or jog!) along the waterfront. It offers a phenomenal view of the river and the Rotterdam skyline. The red bridge is known as Willemsbrug, connecting Noordereiland to the city. The soaring bridge with its asymmetrical pylons is the famous Erasmus Bridge. The Koningshavenbrug, a former railway bridge colloquially known as De Hef, is no longer in use, but remains standing as a monument to the Breda-Rotterdam rail line that once crossed it several times a day. Pop-up seafood restaurant A La Plancha sets up shop every summer on the old embankment of the Willemsbrug, attracting many locals from the rest of Rotterdam to Noordereiland.

This long ribbon lined in designer boutiques, organic bakeries, old-fashioned barber shops and fancy coffee bars draws you from the city centre deep into the heart of Rotterdam West, a neighbourhood known for its amiable balance between working-class and hyper-trendy. Don't forget to foray out into the side streets to make fun discoveries! Like the Kino arthouse cinema in Gouvernestraat or Italian restaurant Lux on 's Gravendijkwal.

Beyond the south banks of the Maas River, a whole world is waiting for you to discover it! The Afrikaanderwijk, Vreewijk, Bloemhof and Hillesluis areas each have their own unique charm. Explore the south side by metro or bicycle, because make no mistake: Rotterdam Zuid is sprawling and extensive. You'll be amazed by the lush greenery on every corner. The Zuiderpark is a wonderful place for an afternoon stroll, picnic, sports and barbecue. It has forests, meadows and fields, swamps, a fantastic playground, even a small beach. A gorgeous nature reserve is tucked away under the Van Brienenoordbrug, too, home to beautiful trees, plants, butterflies and birds, not to mention shaggy Scottish Highlander cows. Feel like a refreshing dip in the water? Swing by the Vreijenburgplas lake or the 'secret' beach on Heijplaat, an untamed corner in the heart of Rotterdam's port. Visiting Heijplaat is a great idea even if you're not planning to swim. The former wharf of the Rotterdam Drydock Company (abbreviated in Dutch as RDM) now houses enterprise, education and research. Cultural events are often hosted at Heijplaat, too; exhibitions are regularly displayed in the Submarine Wharf. Take the Aqualiner for a beautiful boat trip on the Maas, or take a cycle or walking tour of the port of Rotterdam. Numerous routes are available that guide visitors through an ever-changing scenery of industrial areas and nature.

Working-class district becomes design valhalla. That's the shortest version of what happened in the older area on the north side of town. The transformation that this area has gone through in the past decade is astounding. Prewar premises were renovated and historic façades were refurbished. Shoarma stands and sex shops gave way to vintage furniture boutiques, galleries and lunchroos. Take a stroll around the block and walk the route down Zaagmolenkade, Zaagmolendrift, Zwaanshals and Noordplein and you can't miss them. Don't skip Brancoplein for the authentic dash of village charm in an urban setting. Situated on the corner, Tosca is a cute little neighbourhood restaurant serving delicious Mediterranean food.

The closest good beach is a short trainride (32 min) away at Hook of Holland. Trains leave Rotterdam Centraal station every half hour. Wait for the last station, Hoek van Holland Strand (strand = beach). Here you will find a very fine sand beach with good swimming and enough entertainment. Leave the town of Hoek van Holland proper aside, there is nothing there.
