If you are hungry on a Thursday eve, head over to the Isel Park Night Market where you will find an array of food stalls (vegan and vegetarian included), local arts/crafts, and usually a live musician. Bring a picnic blanket (you can use the beach towels we provide) , relax, and enjoy the atmosphere! https://itson.co.nz/2019/20008-isel-market

One of our favourite takeaway places. We highly recommend the Tofu Bibimbap (which can be veganised if you ask them to remove the egg). Yum!

Food, shopping, people-watching and more
If you are in Nelson on a Saturday, it is pretty much compulsory to visit the Saturday Market in Montgomery Square. You'll find local vendors selling crafts, produce, food, artisanal products, art, and more. Be sure to get there before 1pm, which is when it closes. https://www.nelsonmarket.co.nz

If you miss Nelson's Saturday market OR you liked it so much you want to do it again, drive over to Motueka (approx 30-mins) and wander through their Sunday market (8am-1pm). It has some of the same stalls, but it is smaller than Nelson's market AND has more of a hippy vibe to it (with some different stalls too). And while you're in 'Mot', you can stroll around this funky little town, and/or take a drive alongside the little coast road for a different view back toward Nelson. https://motuekasundaymarket.co.nz

If you like taking a stroll through a small, vibrant, outdoor, restaurant/shopping area, head over to the Mapua Wharf. It is about a 25-min drive from Nelson and sits right on the water across from Rabbit Island (there is even a little ferry that runs between Mapua and Rabbit Island sometimes). This is a great little spot for lunch (Alberta's has veg*n options, as does the Golden Bear Brewing Company), and it has some really fun little shops. And if it hot or even merely warm, this is a lovely place to get an ice cream too (veg*n one's usually available at Alberta's). https://www.mapuawharf.co.nz

Drink (and Food)
These drinking establishments have character and offer food as well if you need something to soak up the beer.

This is the oldest pub in NZ, and it is a short-ish (35-min) drive away, through country roads. It is characterful inside and out, with great picnic benches for eating and swilling your cider/beer/shandy outside on a warm day. They offer food as well and are usually willing to make up something to accommodate your dietary needs/preferences even if it isn't on the menu. http://www.moutereinn.co.nz

A 'country pub' in Nelson? Yes! Just head down to Monaco to find the Honest Lawyer pub, which is right on the water and offers a good selection of drink and food (veg*n options for both lunch and dinner). The outside beer garden is lovely on a warm day; even if it isn't warm, I think they provide blankets too! https://www.honestlawyer.co.nz/restaurant.html

Do you love to paddelboard, or have you always wanted to give it a try? If so, rent a board from Moana SUP at Tahunanui Beach. But first, check the wind from your guest suite deck -- you don't want to go out when there are white-caps in the water and kitesurfers zipping along the beach! But if it is looking relatively calm, paddleboarding to Fifeshire Rock or around Haulashore Island is a beautiful way to spend an hour or 2 in Nelson. Make a picnic lunch and drive out to Rabbit Island to spend a couple of hours eating, soaking up the sun on the beach, and playing about in the water. It is generally considered safe for swimming here and it is rarely chock-a-block with people. Rabbit Island is one of our favorite places to visit on a hot day. https://www.tasman.govt.nz/my-council/about-us/media-centre/news-and-notices/moturoa-rabbit-island-access-and-updates/

Another favourite destination of ours for views, paddle-boarding, and hiking is Cable Bay. The hike that starts from this side of the hill is quite daunting to begin with: 30 minutes of steep climb. But the view at the top is amazing and worth every dop of sweat! You'll need to take your own paddle-board or kayak if you have one; if so, you can go out in the bay OR in the estuary when the tide is high (so check those tide charts). And if you are up for further adventures, visit the local Adventure Park, which offers quad-bike tours, a skywire experience, archery and more! If you are hungry after all of this, visit one of the oldest cafes in Nelson for a cuppa and a bite to eat (closed over winter). https://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/95129501/cable-bay-a-tranquil-cove-with-a-unique-slice-of-new-zealand-history https://www.cablebayadventurepark.com https://www.cablebaycafe.co.nz https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/nelson-tasman/places/nelson-area/things-to-do/tracks/cable-bay-walkway/
