San Diego - Best of the Bites on the Beach!

Pacific Beach
My growing list of faves I love to walk to for a bite on the beach just north of my neighborhood. PB is lively and very casual, though you may get the occasional well-heeled night-out patron, you'll generally be more comfortable in beach casual attire even at upscale spots.
Breakfast, burgers and beach views! Woody’s is a fave among locals and tourists alike. Counter service and it can take awhile for your food to come but it’s worth it! Burgers are yummy but they also have healthy snacks like smoothies! Ssssshhhh they have off-the-menu donut holes every morning!

Inside Tower 23 hotel, JRDN is the chicest sunset spot in Pacific Beach. Uncorked Tuesdays means 1/2 select bottles of wines and check their website for upcoming events... they’re always up to something!

Two words: frozen Merlion!! Love the DJ at Sunday Brunch... I’ve named him Aquaman because he looks like the vintage version of the superhero! Watch the surfers and occasionally the dolphins just beyond the wave breaks. Great spot all day long from weekend breakfast to a serious party spot that will have an entry line around the block by about 10pm. Love their avocado tacos and anything that that I can put their house hot sauce with!

La Jolla
La Jolla is the chic northern point of the San Diego beach community with posh boutique hotels and endless fine dining. Although there is still a beach-casual side to La Jolla, the dress here can be a little more upscale.
Three-level restaurant that will blow your mind and your taste buds! Michelin-starred kitchen and killer views from each floor. Rooftop Terrace for day to evening dining and drinks al fresco. They are famous for their fish tacos and their lobster roll! Second floor craft cocktail lounge. Famed Michelin-starred formal evening dining on first floor. Three places in one for the perfect one-stop date night or evening out: Make a dinner reservation in advance for just after sunset at the Michelin-starred "California Modern" formal restaurant on the first floor. Get there before well sunset to snag a spot on the third floor "Ocean Terrace" to enjoy a cocktail as you watch a beautiful sky over the La Jolla cove. I like their tropical spin on a G&T served properly with peppercorns! Enjoy a fantastic dinner down below as you watch the sky turn dark. After dinner, complete the circle with a cocktail at "Level2" the craft cocktail lounge. If the night is still young, go next door for live music and more great views at Eddie V's terrace.

Timeless and romantic. Famous for their seasonal high-tide brunches and dinners, this restaurant lets you dine with the ocean waves lapping against your window. Unforgettable meal in a chic but quaint environment that is a timeless fave among locals and tourists alike for a romantic evening. Check their website or call ahead for seatings as well as reservations because you will definitely need to plan ahead for this one.

Wonderful views from a classic steakhouse with a formal but cozy atmosphere. This is a quiet and romantic spot. Have a drink or open that wine bottle to start it breathing at the warm wood bar before you make your way to dinner along the glass. You'll definitely need a reservation here. Make sure you clarify that you want the Donovans location on Prospect on the water (not K street downtown) and get a table on the window for sure!

Mission Beach
From my neighborhood stretching south just a short walk away or bike if you prefer. Very casual environment even in the handful of moderately-upscale spots.
Happy Hour weekdays from 2-5pm with live music thereafter. Fantastic sunset views and fun, friendly staff! The best sunset views in San Diego!! You gotta get there at least an hour before sunset to get a spot “on the glass”... place fills up fast! I like the white girl rose sangria, sharing the calamari and shishito peppers to start (add some hot sauce to an aioli to dip), salmon sashimi and Philadelphia rolls (I add jalapeño) and you can’t go wrong with any of their cocktails!

Ocean Beach
A healthy bike ride or quick drive away, Ocean Beach is the casual, active, and local-filled counterpart to the south with lots of small bars, pubs, taco shops, and easygoing beach dining. A large pier marks the bustling boardwalk making for great sunset pics and you can even grab a coffee or a bite on the pier café.
A quick drive away, Mike's is famous for the California Burrito... its not for the faint of heart so split one or plan on having leftovers. Their Sangria is also quite tasty. Quick counter service with limited seating though I've never not been able to get a seat immediately. Enjoy the ocean outside with a small patio seating area with a view of the pier and good people watching or take it to go and eat on the beach! My brother-in-law always has to go by Mike's on his way to the airport to grab a California Burrito to-go for his flight... it's becoming a family tradition!

The Hodad's burger is widely credited with putting Ocean Beach on the map! Now a Guy Fiere favorite, it has long been known that when anyone hears someone is heading to San Diego, Hodad's will usually be the first thing they want to tell you about!

With unforgettable views looking back towards the city in the distance and huge boats all around, Top of the Market is a separate restaurant above The Fish Market. With a delightful seafood menu of everyone’s favorites, some fave menu items are the squid pasta, octopus, crab cakes and clam chowder.
