16th Century Town Hall Already over 700 years ago a city hall stood on the right-hand bank of the River Limmat – in the same spot as that of today. The third and present building replaced its old wooden predecessor in the late 17th century. From the Münsterbrücke (bridge) you have a beautiful view of the south side of the city hall and suddenly realize that the edifice is actually built right over the water. The Rathaus (city hall) is largely in its original condition. Although it has Baroque elements, its basic features are of Renaissance style. A mix of styles is also viewed on the inside of the building – where exhibited historical objects and works of art tell the story of Zurich's political life.

Idyllic Promenade in the Middle of Zurich In the 17th century, the most ambitious building project in Zurich’s history was realized against the backdrop of the Thirty Years’ War with the Baroque Schanzenstern, 1642-1678. The structure was a mighty fortification as well as an expression of power, and it represented the self-confidence of the city of Zurich. Schanzengraben has been an idyllic pedestrian zone since 1984, which leads from Zurich's Main Railway Station over a boardwalk and sandstone slabs to the lake. The hectic of the city streets seems far away from here, two meters (6.56 feet) below the regular street level. You can conveniently get back to the city via several staircases. The well-known men's public bath "Flussbad Schanzengraben" is also located here, which becomes the bar "Rimini" in the evening.

The Regenbogen Bar, affectionately known among the people of Zurich as “Bögli” or “Rägebögli,” is a popular venue for locals and tourists alike. In the seclusion of the cozy Rosenhof, the bar is the perfect place for a break from sightseeing or shopping, relaxing at the end of the working day, or simply socializing with friends and family. The bar housed inside the “Zum kleinen Regenbogen,” a building dating back to 1340 and thus one of the oldest in the city, serves delicious cocktails and drinks, snacks like salads, burgers, and sandwiches, and tasty seasonal specials. Between March and October, the Rosenhof market is held in the Rosenhof courtyard on Thursdays and Saturdays, and live bands often put on impromptu concerts on summer evenings.

There’s scarcely a bar which has made history in the way the Odeon has. For decades, it was the haunt of international intellectuals. Exiled writers, painters, and musicians all found a second home at the Odeon. Klaus Mann, Benito Mussolini, Stefan Zweig, James Joyce, Albert Einstein, Lenin – the list is interminable.

Drink where Picasso's hang on the wall The legendary Kronenhalle was initially a meeting place for musicians, actors, authors, and artists. Some of them used to pay with artwork, which is why guests today can gaze at genuine works by Chagall, Picasso, and Miró while dining. French-inspired dishes and classics like “Zürcher Geschnetzeltes” (sliced veal in gravy) are served in a stylish ambience.

Two history-steeped Zurich bars are housed under one roof in the city’s Old Town: the Kon-Tiki and Züri-Bar are connected by a passageway. Züri-Bar is the place to go for anyone wanting to draw a busy day of shopping, work, or exploring the city to a close with a beer, coffee, or cocktail and the sounds of relaxing music – maybe even a live concert – and to fraternize with the locals at the same time. And for those who like to experience young Zurich bands, national and international DJs and singers, and various music events live can do just that at Kon-Tiki. The bar extends over two floors and also has a smokers’ lounge. Thirsty guests will find a variety of beers and other drinks – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic – served in both bars.

It does not particularly attract your attention as you stroll through the Niederdorf – yet the Gräbli Bar is an integral part of this quarter. The bar is a real original; here the Niederdorf lives and breathes, here there is almost always something going on. And for many night owls who want to continue partying well into the night, this bar is the number one place to go. The colorful mix of guests, the fantastic staff and the relaxed ambiance make the Gräbli Bar well worth a visit. What's more, empty stomachs are well filled here – for example with Swiss specialties such as fondue, rösti or Geschnetzeltes Zurich Style.

A piece of tradition has been preserved in the heart of Zurich’s Old Town: the Aelpli Bar possesses one of the oldest tavern licenses in the city. In fact, it is so old that nobody can remember how long a bar has been located here, in the former cowshed on Ankengasse (Anke is the Swiss German word for butter). Every day of the year, people from across the generations come together to enjoy traditional Swiss music. Besides numerous live folk music performances, guests are also invited to make music themselves – with the available instruments (wooden spoons, ratchets, Swiss accordion, piano, and much more besides) or with their own instruments that they have brought with them. Incidentally, people who pay a visit to the Aelpli Bar drink Aelpli Milk. This milk, which is fortified with alcohol, is – so to speak – the “shot” of the house, and should be consumed with caution – for it quickly goes to your head. The wooden tables, chairs and pillars are adorned with notches, marks and carvings, for anyone who would like to immortalize themselves in the timber is welcome to do so. Consequently, each item of furniture has a long and varied story to tell.
