“The local swimming pool. Swimming pools are a big part of Icelandic culture. We love to go hang out and chat in the hot tubs and relax in the steam baths and sauna. Take your own swimsuits and bath towels and be prepared to shower before and after in a shared locker room. This one is my personal favorite due to the circular steam room and variety of temperatures in the hot tubs. After you can grab a burger at Hagavagninn, a coffee at Kaffihús vesturbæjar, get one of the best cinnamon buns in town at Brauð og co. or go to Ísbúð Vesturbæjar for an ice cream. Icelanders are also crazy for their ice cream and the swimming pool / ice cream combo is popular all year round!”

“Welcome to the Grillmarket At the heart of the culinary experience that is the Grillmarket is Iceland´s pristine nature. A close working collaboration with dedicated local farmers guarantees the very best in local produce and allows us to create a menu that´s a magical fusion of tradition and modern cuisine. Just some of the local products that feature on the menu are lamb, beef, trout, quail, skyr and honey. At the Grillmarket our aim is to work closely with local farmers. We buy most of our produce directly from the farm. They tell us what’s in season, then we cook the product our own special way and the customer gets to enjoy the end result. Through our cooking we strive to highlight the origin of each product while using fire, smoke, fire logs and coal. The outcome is an unexpected and exciting culinary treat for our customers where our Icelandic heritage and the modern age meet.”

“Kaffibarinn is one of the oldest bars in town. The tourist to local hipster ratio has understandably shifted in favour of the tourists in the last decade or so. But that does not seem to make Kaffibarinn any less hip. In fact it sort of adds a new level of coolness. Kaffibarinn at the weekends is an experience you will either love or hate. But if you don´t fancy the partying crowds at night, but you like the sound of Kaffibarinn´s warm, dingly charm, then check it out in the daytime for a cosy coffee or draught beers on offer.”
