“Wayah Bald is a high-altitude treeless open area in Nantahala National Forest, near Franklin, North Carolina. The Wayah Bald Observation Tower is located at the area's highest point (5,385 feet); the stone observation tower was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 for fire detection. The Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail cross at Wayah Bald. Wayah Bald is a popular destination for hikers, especially during Spring, when the rhododendron and azaleas are in bloom. We have driven here several times which about a 1 hr from our cabin. The drive along Wayah Rd passes through gorgeous views of streams and mountain cottages. There are picnic tables and bathrooms near the parking area. ”

“Wayah Bald has a 360 degree view of the mountains and you can see for miles. There's an old stone fire tower you can lookout from. The Appalachian Trail goes right through it. One of our guests said it has an especially beautiful sunset. Practically a "birds eye view" of the mountains!”

“Because.... of excellent trout fishing on some of the prettiest water around. Fishable year round but beware kayakers and rafters during the summer months who have no problem ruining your latest, greatest catch. Or if you're there in the summer and fishing isn't your thing, you can book a rafting trip. For fishing, stick to upper portion above power station. Other nearby rivers for trout fishing: East Fork of French Broad, Tuckasegee, and Davidson. All to the west of Asheville.”

Point of Interest
“This hike is fairly short... less than 3 miles round trip. However, it is considered a moderate trail with some steep climbs. But the view from the top is worth all the effort! once you reach the summit, you'll see a tall fire tower with a set of stairs to the top. Take the climb for an unmatched view of the Nantahala Forest, Fontana Lake, the Little Tennessee River valley and Telico Gap. ”
