“An original “outsider” settlement of fisherman lived here who were not permitted to enter the city of the tribes (as Galway was known) because of their status. The area was full of beautiful character with stone-washed white thatched cottages... Unfortunately they were all destroyed long ago by the Free State government due to an outbreak of TB in the area, which was such a pity. The area is so full of history with a local museum, pier and a park dedicated to the locality and the victims of mass immigration from the area - and the west of Ireland in general - during the famine. A local man also built an exact replica of the traditional Claddagh cottages of the era recently - Kate’s Cottage - And this is just beautiful; and a must see for any tourist. There are wonderful storytelling evenings held their during the summer. ”
