“Windsor Great Park has witnessed countless events throughout history, dating back to pre-Saxon times - each of which has left its own distinctive mark on this impressive landscape. From William the Conqueror using the landscape as a hunting ground, to Queen Victoria entertaining on the shores of Virginia Water – its Royal connections remain strong today under the stewardship of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, the current Ranger of Windsor Great Park.”

“Forbury Gardens is a lovely Victorian town garden, created at the height of the urban parks movement. The gardens have recently undergone major restoration. They are located not far from Reading Station. The ornamental gardens have a wall around which provides a peaceful and tranquil retreat. There is a bandstand, and bands play every weekend in the summer. The Forbury Gardens is home to the famous Maiwand Lion statue. The garden kiosk serves coffee, ice-creams and light lunches. The gardens have been entered for three national competitions, and have so far won a Green Flag Award every year since re-opening, along with annual accreditation as a Green Heritage Site, the BALI award and Best Regional Park in the Britain in Bloom competition.”

“In the Hampshire countryside, seven miles south of Reading, there’s a big outdoor recreation area opened in 1974 by the 8th Duke and Duchess of Wellington. The park has 350 acres of hardwood and softwood forest, woven with four nature trails and a habitat for fallow and red deer. The park also has a 35-acre lake with a cafe on its shore, and when the summer comes there’s loads for children to get up to. Domestic animals await at the animal farm and petting barn, there are adventure playgrounds, a miniature train, sandpits, a maze, “enchanted forest” and 12 holes of mini-golf.”
