This is a tough one. I booked Kailash (or Trica Eco) thinking that I was staying in an active community that teaches meditation, yoga, permaculture etc. However, they are currently going through a rebrand and have stopped all activities apart from two (!) yoga classes per week, which was a real disappointment. I knew they were going through changes and had concerns, I asked all the right questions but unfortunately never got a real response. I did take the risk and only when I got there I realised that the retreat was not what I had hoped for and what was promised on their site... They say they are the "biggest dedicated yoga temple in Asia", but I was the only guest on the whole ground... There also isn't much left of the "sustainable eco-village and permaculture farm" unfortunately. Not sure how much of the food really came from their own garden. Whilst the private homes on the ground are polished, the communal spaces certainly are run down and in need of updating. I also would really describe this as a "community" as most people seem to have left Kailash. And those who stayed seemed unhappy and miserable. I was also really disappointed with the team on the ground I have to say. Being the only guest I was surrounded by a lot of local workers and volunteers who are trying to bring Kailash up-to-speed. I also overheard some conversations between the owners and some of their staff and contractors that weren't held in the sort of tone that you should expect, certainly not in front of guests. There was a lot of work going on, photo shoots for the new webpage (for one of which I even modeled!), so it was hard to get into a holiday spirit, but I also felt as though I was in everyone's way. One morning the owner even chased me out of the gym because he thought I might move things that were being arranged for the shoot. Anyway, I left after two nights as I had already lost enough valuable time of my holiday. I was very transparent with the hosts from the moment I arrived but was never offered a part-refund. On top of it, I was even charged for the food (off-platform which is against Airbnb's t&c), but I really couldn't be bothered to get into this kind of conversation with these sort of people. They really must struggle if they apply such dubious business practices to honest, paying guests. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this retreat at this moment. I really do wish them all the best and hope they can sort things out. However, my feeling is that Kailash has had its best years...
