The lighting in this house is perfect all day and night, windows in every room. Perfectly located in the Chestnut Neighborhood, you are in walking distance to a 24hr coffeehouse, several restaurants, a great new bar & a laundry mat. Charming as heck. 5 minute walk to a bus line that runs downtown, north, west and south. 10 minute walk to the train that runs north all the way to Leander and south into downtown. The neighborhood has a up&coming vibe with families and even a bluegrass band!

El lugar

This house is ALL about the charm of minimalist building style of the early 1920's. Small rooms feed into each other one after another. Windows and doors can be opened for a delightful morning and evening draft.

Because of her age, this house has many quirks! Window units and fans are placed throughout the home in order to help you customize the environment to your desired specifications. NO Central Air Conditioning nor Heat. Though gas heaters can be made available should request it. The house stove is also a gas stove. Lighting instructions are available on site to help walk you through the process if you are not familiar and to help keep everyone safe. Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors are throughout the home as well.

Please help yourself to the pantry, mini-fridge and record player (records are on the shelf under the record player in the dark green salon room). Track lighting and lamps are available and the "on" switch is located near the ground at the electrical plug level.

Please leave your trash for us to take care of! Recycle bins are available in the kitchen (#1-#7 can be recycled) - we will empty these as well.

Your key is pink and is on an obnoxious key chain to help you keep track of it - you are more than welcome to remove the key chain though!

Umbrellas are available and by the front door in case you get caught in one of those Texas thunderstorms.

The house is old and the Summers in Texas hot, so occasionally we see a spider, a water bug or an ant. Feel free to take care of them and thank you for understanding our little piece of dilapidated Heaven.

Mr. Fats is our one year old rescue kitty and he is indoor/outdoor meaning NO litter box! His window entrance is in the back kitchen window and he will likely come and go during your stay. He has all his shots, is micro chipped and is generally a very happy go lucky little fellow. Feel free to get some snuggles! He eats a bowl of food morning and night that is near his entrance. If you could help to keep him fed and refill his water, that would be ideal. Thank you for helping care for him!

All the plants have been watered before your arrival and will likely be just fine until we return. :)

Annie was a terrific host and it was a pleasure to meet her and her new roommate LaLa. They were extremely friendly and gracious from the outset and the house was as described. I enjoyed the artsy feel of the house and neighborhood. It was in close proximity to a number of good restaurants/coffee shops and was a short ride from anywhere one would want to go. Annie made me feel welcome and like a part of Austin from the moment I got there and I would gladly stay again.

My partner and I needed a no-frills place to stay for a single night after meeting up with friends in Austin. This funky "artist house" seemed to fit the bill. The listing said it was for the "entire home/apt" and perhaps I didn't stop to think that the low price might be too good to be true. The host, Annie was responsive to my messages and everything seemed to be going well, but when we arrived at the house, it soon became clear that this was not to be a night alone in a quiet house. The house was clearly occupied, seemingly by the guy who greeted us along with a big jumpy dog. The place was not particularly clean. The room we were assigned to had a partially-inflated air mattress on the floor covered in old dingy blankets--no sheets, and no lock on the door. This was not what we thought we were getting and it certainly wasn't what the listing had described. I ended up getting my money back through the extremely courteous people at Airbnb customer service. We spent a comfortable night in a Super 8. I suggest you do the same, or plan to spend quite a bit more for a legitimate place to stay in this area of Austin.

Respuesta de Annie:
Unfortunately Natalie's last minute trip, stressful circumstances and misunderstanding of our listing (we have two: one is for the whole house and the other for just a room) caused her to have an unhappy experience with our booking. To clarify, the house sleeps up to 5 people and the per person cost is average $20 (pretty fair for the market and walk-able amenities including downtown, train station, three neighborhood bars, a sandwich shop, a 24 hour coffeehouse and more). I'm sorry to read this review but do not think it reflects our other guests' opinions. As a matter of fact, we are very highly rated and take pride in what we offer to our guests when they stay. To address the mattress, it's a top of the line Queen size inflatable from Bed, Bath and Beyond. We've reached out to AirBnb to have them come and take photos of our space that we believe will help shed some more light on what we offer here at our little artist's cottage. Happy travels. Annie and Chris are great! I stayed at their place for two days, mostly to write. There are lots of neat coffee shops and restaurants around, many of which were glossed in a binder that Annie prepared for guests, and the entire neighborhood is very walkable/runnable. I would definitely stay with them and 4-legged friends Grover, Fats, and Karen again. One note for out of towners: the weather ranged from 30-70 degrees, so pack layers.

Annie is an incredibly fun and gracious host! She and her boyfriend Mikey and their wonderful loving pets made our stay a blast. They gave us gifts, they took us to an insanely unique potluck/game night at their neighbors and even drove us to the airport. Two of the nicest and most interesting people we've met on our travels. We can't wait to visit and see them again! Did I mention they have the best pets in the world?!

Annie was incredibly sweet and accommodating the entire time. She gave me a ride to her Little Pink Monster Art Gallery (go check it out!) as part of the East Austin open studios. The house is in a great location, pretty close to downtown and right in the middle of East Austin. The room includes an air mattress (which was pretty comfortable), a space heater, and Annie had set out fresh towels. The two pets were adorable (although be careful if you show the kitten any attention he will keep coming back!), and Annie made sure they were fed and walked. The house is a bit older and not huge, and the kitchen setup is minimal, but the price is right and if spending the night surrounded by art sounds appealing to you, you'll probably have a great time like I did.

My Girlfriend and I stayed at Annie's place for about 4 nights. Annie wasn't there to check us in but the intern at her art gallery checked us in. We liked Annie's place a lot and appreciated the fact that her place was very centrally located, just 10 minutes away from Downtown Austin and 12-15 minutes from UT Austin. The neighborhood seemed alright, as we expected and we didn't at any point feel unsafe. Her place is walking distance to a 24 hour coffee shop, Bennu coffee, which is great for hanging out and getting some late night coffee or food. Annie was definitely welcoming and pleasant to talk to and her place was full of interesting art pieces. She give us some interesting recommendations for food as well. That said, we definitely had some hiccups at her place. Firstly, we did not know that she had an air mattress and when we reached, the mattress hadn't been properly inflated. There were also several cockroaches in the house and a couple of them were in our room, so that was rathe unpleasant. The place was also a bit dusty. Annie has a dog and a cat, both of whom are adorable but on our first night when we reached her place at around midnight, her dog ran out the front door as soon as we opened it. We figured he was going to the bathroom and we waited for him to come back inside but he ran out into the street. Both my Girlfriend and I had to chase after him for 45 minutes in the dark. We found the dog about 5 blocks off her house. I tried to reach Annie on her cellphone that night to inform her about this situation but she did not reply to my text messages or pick up my phone call, so communicating with her was difficult. My Girlfriend and I felt responsible and liable for the dog's safety and didn't want to simply leave him on the road as he could have been run over by a car at night. This caused us a great deal of stress as we didn't know what we were supposed to do in such a situation and we couldn't get in touch with Annie for an entire night. We accidentally caused somme damage to Annie's AC. She was very kind to us and we worked on a very reasonable settlement that seemed fair. She actually saved us some money on the repair and only charged us the security deposit. Annie did not offer us a table fan for the rest of our stay or bother to find out if we would be okay without an AC. We had to go to Walmart to buy a table fan for ourselves. Despite these issues, we had a good time at her place and I want to thank her for having us as guests and letting us share her living space.

Annie was the sweetest (as were Grover and kitty)! She was very communicative and flexible before and during my stay, and always made sure I had what I needed. The neighborhood is quiet, a little eclectic and well located in relation to the goings on in the east side and downtown. The coffee shop around the corner is killer. Annie's listing is true to its description - minimal (like a gallery), but a comfortable and welcoming place to stay.

I'm a 30 year old small business owner. :) I work from home or on location. I love being outside kayaking, hiking or running when it's pretty and inside snuggled up with a book or a movie when it's not nice outside. I love traveling but have not been out of the United States yet. I am hoping to live in Barcelona one day. I love art history. :)

As far as hosting, I am pretty hands off. The space is prepared - come and enjoy it and enjoy the beautiful city of Austin, TX. If you do need a taxi, a cafe suggestion or help finding the best venue for live music - just ask! I'm here to help! :)
