Our first impression of Princess Mentigi was great- the pool is big and infinity styled and the view over the Gili islands is spectacular. The place looks exactly like the pictures (even better actually) and is located up a very steep narrow driveway. Our room was large and also very nicely decorated. Over all, the feel of the hotel was super relaxing and picturesque. Unfortunately our memories are ruined due to my boyfriend getting really bad food poisoning from the food. A lot of food had run out, including fish which ruled out our top choice for dinner. I understood at the time as it was the night after New Years. When it came to dinner, we got our meals around 7.40 (even though we arranged at 4pm for 7pm dinner) and it was disastrous. Costing about 275,000, we expected a feast, but instead we got cold and undercooked sausages, a few shrimp, one tiny piece of beef and some pieces of calamari. The head of house claimed the seafood and steak was fresh but it was blatantly frozen, and the calamari was disgusting. It was definitely old and off and was not even cooked properly. My boyfriend developed food poisoning within the next 24 hours and is still really sick (5 days later). We did not expect this from a beautiful- looking and high end hotel like Princess. What's more, there was another group of 6 who arrived after us and ordered the fish dinner with no qualms! They even got extra fish when they asked. We were so upset, all we wanted was some nice fish and even chose to stay at the hotel rather than dine out expecting the food to be really good- how wrong we were. I didn't say anything to the host because it was just embarrassing and awkward for both parties- why would he lie to us about having no more fish? And no one went out to get fish, it was there the whole time just not for us apparently... The other group hadn't preordered it either. Very bizarre. They also tried to charge us the next day for our stay even though we paid through AirBnb and the receipt was there, which is poor organisation/communication. Aside from that, we enjoyed our stay very much and it was a beautiful location but the poor management and food was a major let down. I wanted to give 3/4 stars but seeing how ill my boyfriend is I chose to be brutally honest. Food poisoning is absolutely shitty (pun intended) and my BF is spending his 2nd and last week visiting me here in the bathroom/bed with a 39 degree Celsius fever/shivers, diarrea/vomiting, nausea and he is extremely weak and can’t do anything. It may sound harsh to blame the hotel for food poisoning (I know how common it is) but it's not travellers diarrhea and if you smelt the calamari he ate, you'd understand. I could have handled the no fish and other...
