"Live your beliefs... " Henry David Thoreau

El lugar

Thoreau's is located 20 minutes from Lion's Head and about 55 minutes to Bruce Peninsula National Park. This tiny cabin is perfect for experienced outdoor enthusiasts who embrace nature but also enjoy the comforts of electricity. There is no running water. Non-potable water will be provided at the back of the cabin for washing up, dish washing, putting out the campfires, etc.

Note: in the summer months, enjoy the "shower in a tree" with a solar heated shower bag. Privacy curtains are provided.

Guests are required to bring their drinking water, sleeping bag (or blankets) pillow and towel. Maximum two people.

The cabin features a coffee maker, filters, small fridge with freezer, microwave, two-element hotplate, toaster, kettle, heater, fan, radio/CD player, table, two chairs, dishes, pots, cutlery, dish towels, dish soap, etc. A futon sofa quickly transforms into a double bed.

When nature calls, a brightly-painted outhouse is steps away. There will be an odour as I use Sep-tonic to break down waste.

A fire pit with wood is provided along with two campfire chairs. A small picnic table completes the "back to nature" experience!

Safety features include a photoelectric smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, flashlight and a whistle. The closest hospital is located in Lion's Head, a 20-minute drive away. Watch for roots, rocks and stumps when walking on the property.

Free wifi is just down the road at "Katemma's," cafe, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays to Mondays. Reservations are required for their special Friday and Sunday night dinners. For quick-needed staples, By the Bay General Store in Pike Bay is also a few minutes away open seven days a week.

"The Rocks" are spectacular limestone formations about a 15 minute walk away. They are located off Julian Drive. You can swim here.

In Lion's Head, hot showers are available (seasonally) at the Marina for $5. Lion's Head also has a nice small beach. Enjoy the spectacular views. Non-potable water is free at the Lion's Head Beach Park Campground. Potable water is free at the nearby Beach Pavilion. Excellent free wifi is provided at the Lion's Head Library. Even if the library is closed, you can sit outside and enjoy the bandwidth. The Bruce Trail is accessible from two access points in Lion's Head. Parking is provided.

I live an hour away but will have everything ready for your stay. Flexible check-in allows for your traveling convenience, you can arrive at any time. Instructions regarding location of key, other information, etc. will be provided ahead of time.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy your stay!

Judi was great! She met us at the cabin upon arrival with fresh baked cookies for my kids :) She took the time to tell us all about the cabin, she told us about some great local places to visit and about events happening around town. She left us with some brochures to keep us busy on our vacation. Judi was a fantastic host and if we ever get back up there, we would choose this cabin again!

Judi went above and beyond for our stay. Almost everything we needed was provided. It was a very unique experience, a great option if you don't like tent camping but still want to "rough it". I would definitely stay here again. Thanks Judi!

Thanks Rebecca for your review. It is nice to have heat when the nights are a bit cooler. I'm so glad it didn't rain though. Hope to see you soon.

Amazing little secluded cabin! We loved being able to sit back and build a campfire, with no distractions! Amazing location, close to lions head and only a 50ish minute drive from the Grotto! We would 100% stay here again!

Great place and great value. If you are looking to go to Bruce Pinusula national park you will need to go to the park at 7am to get parking time slot as parking is limited and disappear quickly. The slots are from 7am-11am 12pm-4pm and 5pm-9pm. Once all parking passes are given out you will be unable to get in. So make sure you arrive there at 7am to book your slots. We had a great time and area is beautiful! Definitely would do it again! Thanks for being a gracious host Judi!

Hello, I'm a mom of two college kids and love gardening, yard work and hiking. My husband is a classic car enthusiast. We live south of the Bruce Peninsula, one of the most spectacular nature areas in Ontario. I am learning French and spend winters in Montreal, je l'adore!
