Pros: This cottage is a destination! It's really beautiful. The colors, materials, and features are world class. This place should be in Southern Living! The listing is accurate. Beds were very comfortable and "new" feeling. Linens were great. AC worked well. Kitchen well stocked. The front screen porch is beautiful and serene - great place to enjoy a beverage and connect with nature. It's a short drive to conveniences or popular destinations (Black Mountain, Montreat, Asheville) yet the property feels isolated. You cannot hear anything but nature. The stream running through the property is picturesque and fun for exploring and rock-hopping.
For awareness: No surprises here as the listing is accurate... just highlighting for others to consider so you are not surprised. 1) The fire pit is on the other side of the other house on the property (apparently the owners' vacation house, which was not occupied during out stay) so you cannot see it from the rental cottage. 2) There are no chairs for outdoor use, such as sitting around the fire pit. Bring your own or be prepared to sit on the ground. 3) There is no grille and no grilling tools. 4) There is no icemaker (but there are ice cube trays). 5) When leaves are on the trees, the canopy blocks nearly all the direct sunlight, making the property and the interior of the house quite dark. Not for sun seekers, but great for sleeping in.
Cons: 1) The doors between rooms are beautifully hand-crafted but do not seal, so they do not block sound. If a person in the other room snores, bring earplugs. Or if you want kids to get to sleep before the adults, the adults must go outdoors if you want to talk without the kids hearing you. 2) The dryer (which is in the larger of two full bathrooms) vents into the bathroom. It makes the room smell like a dryer vent, puts a lot of heat and moisture into the room, and spreads lint. I don't know if this is by design or if the vent got disconnected somehow. I notified the host and they acknowledged, so if it's not by design perhaps it will be fixed for the next visitors. 3) The house is in the woods so as expected there are many insects on the outside. When we arrived, there were also many insects inside, especially spider webs (all rooms) and ants (kitchen). If cleaned properly I would not expect this to be a problem, and even for us it was a small effort to clean up the spiderwebs. Feedback was given to the hosts.
