Just above the tidal waters of the River Tamar, nestled amongst the trees on the south facing bank, lies the Count House. Steeped in history and surrounded by nature, it is a peaceful riverside retreat that exudes calm and cosiness.

Enjoy crisp winter days reading by the wood burner or perhaps watching avocets on the mud flats across the river, and long summer days exploring the river by kayak and barbecuing on the terrace enjoying the evening light.

El alojamiento
The Count House is a unique and historic cottage perched on the banks of the river in the heart of the Tamar Valley. Over the years it has had many uses, but has now been lovingly converted into a quiet and comfortable hideaway, filled with artwork, photos and books from another age.

Inside the cottage you will find a well equipped, cosy kitchen with a table and chairs, fridge, electric oven and a Rayburn, which helps keep the cottage warm in winter and slowly cooks your meals. Bi-fold doors open onto a terrace with spectacular views up and downstream and a table, chairs and barbecue are all provided for your use.

A short hallway leads to the utility room, where there is plenty of room for keeping coats and boots, a washing machine, Belfast sink and separate WC.

In the sitting room there is a wood burning stove, next to a cosy armchair and a large, comfortable sofa. There are plenty of books for you to delve into during your stay, from classic novels to local history books. You will also find a television and Scrabble to enjoy. Binoculars are by the window, ready to spot herons, curlews and avocets. There is wifi and mobile coverage throughout.

The bedroom has a super king bed with a pocket sprung mattress and that view to greet you in the morning. There is a chest of drawers and plenty of hanging space. The sunny window seat is the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea and a good book or just to sit and watch the ebb and flow of the tide.

Next door is a well lit bathroom with a double ended roll top bath with shower attachment, a sink and loo. Fresh, white towels are provided.

The cottage also has a single attic bedroom accessed by ladder. If you think you may like to make use of this second bedroom, please contact us first to make sure it will be suitable for you.

Not far from the terrace, steep steps lead down to the jetty where you can swim at high tide or explore the upper reaches of the Tamar by canoe or rowing boat. Nearer at hand two donkeys, Arabella and Willow, help to keep the old orchard trimmed and between the apple trees rare jonquils thrive and flower in early spring.

If you can tear yourself away from the cottage, there are plenty of wonderful walks from the doorstep. Follow the meandering footpaths through woodland and across fields, many of which are free from livestock, or explore the country lanes by bike and reward yourself with a country pub lunch.

PLEASE NOTE we can only accept a minimum stay of 7 nights over the Christmas and New Year period at a cost of £100 per night.

Acceso para huéspedes
The Count House is found at the end of a long, grassy driveway with parking available just a few steps from the front door. In wet weather a gravelled area is available to park on just a short walk from the cottage.

Bi-fold doors open out from the kitchen onto a private terrace overlooking the river, the perfect place to enjoy an alfresco breakfast in the morning sunshine or a glass of wine in the evening watching birds return home to roost.

Nearby there are steep steps leading down to the jetty where there are kayaks and a rowing boat.

A footpath from the garden leads you straight into the woods and there are fantastic walks to be had all around the local area.

Otros aspectos destacables
Due to the nature of the cottage, it is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair users but may be suitable for those with limited mobility. The cottage has just one small step up to the living area. It is worth noting that while there is a shower attachment in the bath, there is not a separate shower. If you are in any doubt as to whether the cottage will suit your needs, please do get in touch.

As the cottage is situated on the river bank, we do not recommend it for small children though babes in arms are very welcome. The cottage does have a single attic bedroom accessed by ladder which may be suitable for older children, so please get in touch with us before booking to discuss if this will be appropriate for you.

You are very welcome to bring 1 or 2 well behaved dogs to stay with you at the cottage at no extra charge, providing they are sociable and aren't inclined to chase chickens! If you think this could be an issue just let us know and we will make sure the chickens are kept in their run. We only ask that dogs are kept to the tiled area of the house and that you pick up after them. Our border collie Rags is always glad to host four legged friends, and there is plenty of room for them to roam around, excellent walks from the doorstep and, of course, the river to swim in.

We can offer a discount for stays over 15 days - please contact us for further details.

Bere Alston, Inglaterra, Reino Unido

The Count House is situated on the Bere Peninsula in the heart of the Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a fantastic variety of flora and fauna throughout the year, miles of beautiful footpaths and spectacular views to be found throughout the Valley.
The area is also a World Heritage Site for Mining, and the cottage itself dates from the 1800's when it was the Account House for the nearby mine, the main hub of the day-to-day activity. The local landscape is dotted with engine houses and chimney stacks, reminders of this now tranquil area's industrious past.

The village of Bere Alston is a short 5 minute drive away, and has several grocery shops, a Post Office supplying delicious locally made bread and a butchers shop.

The historic market town of Tavistock is a 15 minute drive from the Count House and has a lovely selection of shops (including supermarkets), cafes and delis, as well as a regular indoor pannier market. There is also a beautiful park, leisure centre and regular live entertainment at The Wharf.

Dartmoor National Park is just a 20 minute drive away, with over 300 square miles of open moorland, granite tors and secluded valleys to discover.

Both the north and south coasts are about an hour's drive away with beautiful sandy beaches, secluded coves and the South West Coast Path all ready to be explored.

The Count House is perfectly placed for exploring both Devon and Cornwall, and if you are planning to head further afield you will find many great attractions within easy driving distance, such as the Eden Project (1 hour), RHS Rosemoor (1 ¼ hours) and Powderham Castle (1 ¼ hours).
