Søndre Sandøy is perfect for relaxing days - all year through. The island is one of the Hvaler islands. On Hvaler you can fish, bathe, eat well, sail, sunbathe on polished granite rocks, paddle, explore Ytre Hvaler National Park and much more.
Hvaler consists of a group of islands off the coast of Fredrikstad. The city centre is located at Skjærhalden, Kirkeøy. Søndre Sandøy is one of the eastern islands of the archipelago, close to the Swedish border. The island has nice sandy beaches, beautiful countryside with lovely flower meadows and some dark woods with uneven terrain.
Søndre Sandøy lies northeast of Herføl, with only the narrow Gravningsundet Sound separating it from Nordre Sandøy. To the east is Sekken, a narrow and exposed stretch of water that separates the island from the Swedish mainland. It is the largest of the eastern isles, with Svarteberget at 50 m its highest point. Søndre Sandøy has two ferry jetties, Nedgården in the west and Gravningsund at Buvika in the northeast. A fine gravel road connects these, but there are many other paths that will bring you to bathing spots on the east coast.
Down the centuries there have been several periods of intense, but short-lived, herring fishing. In the decades before 1900 the fishing and processing of herring was a sizable industry, not least in Gravningsundet. We can still see the large red buildings on both sides of the sound that were part of the industry.
The “capital” of Hvaler – with 700 permanent residents – is Skjærhalden on Kirkøy, the largest island. Here you will find the town hall and police station, small shops, restaurants, quayside pubs, and summer visitors in abundance. If you are looking for leisure activities or a lazy day in harbour, Skjærhalden is the place. The island hopping cruise with M/S Hollungen starts from here.

Vi elsker å være på hytta vår på Hvaler og å reise til interessante steder rundt om i verden. Vi er ikke utpregete strandløver, og liker å dra på museer og severdigheter når vi reiser.
