Note: If you're not a late night fest, bring earplugs, music in the neighborhood continues until the week hours.
Note: Very important. Debit and credit card issue by american banks DO NOT work yet in Cuba. Major credit cards like Visa and MasterCard are accepted for payments and cash withdrawals, except when issued by U.S. banks, which obviously completely eliminates American Express. The same conditions apply for Travelers Checks, so cash is the only solution for U.S. visitors who do not have an account in a non-American bank.

- ADDRESS IN CUBA
When filling out your tourist card you must include your address in Cuba. Make sure to include the address of a legitimate hotel or legal casa particular, even if you plan to travel around the country. This will help you to avoid any conflicts or confusion with Cuban immigration officers.
-WHAT IF I BECOME ILL OR INJURED DURING MY TRIP.
Medical Care - You have no reason to be concerned with health issues during your visit to Cuba. Cuba has the highest percentage of physicians per capita in the world and they take great pride in providing tourists with good medical care. If you are staying with us, we will direct you to the best 24 hours clinic in Cuba.

Health Regulations - No vaccinations are needed for travel into Cuba. Please see the website for the Center for Disease Control for recommendations.

Medical Insurance - As of 1 May 2010, Cuban authorities are requiring that travelers to the island have insurance coverage for medical emergencies. The cost of your airline ticket includes insurance that covers travelers while in Cuba.

The insurance that is included in your package covers the following:

Medical expenses for sudden illness and accidents up to the amount of 25,000 CUC
Repatriation cost up to the amount of 7,000 CUC
- HOW CAN I PLAN MY WEEKLY BUDGET IN CUBA?
Cuba is not the most expensive place in the Caribbean, nor is it the cheapest. However, in comparison with most other Caribbean destinations you can get by with much less if you're a savvy traveler and know how to spend your Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). Those staying in a mid-range casa particular will be covered for accommodation, food and transportation costs with $75 – 100 CUC per day. Low budget travelers could get by with even less, especially if buying food from local vendors on the street.
-DIETARY REQUIREMENTS
Attention (vegans, celiac, gluten intolerance, fructose intolerance, lactose intolerance, etc.) You should expect a lesser variety than what you can expect at home. We recommend bringing your own supply of snacks with you.
Vegetarians should be aware that while you can get vegetarian meals in Cuba, you generally won't find much variety and you may get tired of being offered the same every day (i.e. - rice, beans, omelette and salad). Vegetarians are often surprised that their meals are no cheaper than those containing meat, and this is because vegetables on the free market in Cuba are of similar prices to those of meat.
- IS CUBA SAFE FOR AMERICANS? Yes. Cuba is very safe. In fact, Cuba has the lowest crime rate in Latin America. The average traveler has little reason to worry about personal safety in the streets, hotels, or any other places he or she might visit. While petty crime does exist, it occurs only rarely and poses little problem for attentive travelers.

- CAN I EXCHANGE MONEY IN CUBA? Yes. In Cuba, airports, hotels, banks, and CADECA bureaus exchange currency (U.S. and Canadian dollars, Euros, British pounds, and other types). Hotels are often the most convenient places, and offer similar rates to banks and CADECA bureaus. Be sure to carry proper ID (typically, a passport).

- WHAT CAN I BRING BACK TO THE U.S. FROM CUBA? Currently, Americans are allowed unlimited quantities of informational or educational materials, such as books, lms, artwork, posters, photographs, and CDs. Americans are also allowed to bring back as much as $400 worth of other goods, including up to $100 worth of cigars and rum.
-DRIVING IN CUBA
If you commit a traffic violation while driving, you can have a fine applied to your rental contract. For visitors to Cuba, the amounts usually range from $10-$30 CUC depending on the infraction committed. Under no circumstances should you deliver cash to the police officer issuing the ticket, which could be considered bribery. Outstanding fines are resolved upon completion of your rental company directly with the rental counter functionary upon closing the rental contract and the amount to be paid will be reflected on the rental contract. Besides opening the doors to larger problems, offering to bribe police officers to avoid accepting a legitimate ticket only encourages deviant behavior and in my humble opinion creates a bad precedent for future visitors to Cuba.
- BOOKING
Don't worry your reservation will be respected, in the same way we expect that you notify us if you decide cancel it. B&B owner have to pay a huge monthly tax to rent out. We have to pay this tax even if we have guest or not.
- ABOUT AIRPORT PICK UP SERVICE
Our airport pick-up service is offered to prevent some unscrupulous taxi drivers from diverting guests to other untrustworthy lodgings and without nuisance, as a long way or others
If you do not accept our trusted pick-up service. Please take these precautions:
- Do not allow the driver to change the destination. DO NOT BE FOOLED! Although they are very friendly, they are only interested in their commission for bringing tourists to illegal lodging. They will disappear and leave you to deal with the authorities.
- When you arrive at your destination, and before the taxi leaves, speak with the personnel of the lodging and make sure they know your name. This is a way to check you are in the right place.
-The taxi driver may arrive at our destination, get off the taxi on arrival, and pretend speak with the staff and come back telling you that our casa is sold out. That is false information. Your reservation is 100% guaranteed with us.
-DO NOT give our phone number to the taxi driver. They will pretend to call and speak with the staff and actually speak with someone else and tell you our casa is full. That is also false.
-Speak with the taxi driver the least possible.
- Be alert to a long way, We are just 30 minutes, 20 Km and taxi fare is around 30.00 CUC
-Our honest and friendly staff will be waiting and expecting your arrival.

- What kinds of clothes should I wear in Cuba?
We suggest you should dress lightly, especially in summer. It is recommended to wear clothes made of cotton, linen or rayon; such as pullovers, shirts, T-shirts, shorts and comfortable shoes (sandals or running shoes). For winter, a light wool jacket or sweater and cotton pants can be enough for the occasional cold nights. Sunglasses, a hat and sun lotion are very necessary, as well as repellents against insects, especially if you travel to a beach area or a rural excursion.

-We strongly advise not missing some of this spots: VIÑALES, TRINIDAD, PLAYA LARGA AND VARADERO BEACH.

-Cuban Weather
Cuba is a tropical island. the average temperature is 21° C in January and 27° C in July.
Note:
The Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC) was introduced by the Cuban financial authorities to take out all foreign currencies from circulation, and offer an alternative that is in almost all senses equal to US dollars. It replaces the dollar as currency where previously dollars were quoted in places such as hotels, restaurants and so called 'dollar shops', and is the new 'tourist' currency.
US Dollars were widely accepted throughout the island, but since 8 November 2004 US Dollars are no longer accepted, and a 10% commission is charged to exchange them. The national banks have since introduced the Peso Convertible (CUC) in substitution of foreign currencies, which is almost equal in value to the US Dollar. Money should only be changed at official exchange bureau or banks to avoid scams confusing the two currencies.

By way of context, we are four sisters in our fifties. We are all fairly well-traveled. We’ve stayed in Ritz Carlton hotels and modest bed and breakfasts and everything in between. We read up ahead of our trips, so we’re rarely too surprised (either pleasantly or unpleasantly). That said, Las Mercedes B & B was a very pleasant surprise. The photographs are accurate representations of the unit. It is clean and nicely furnished, with an iron and ironing board, hair dryer, towels, toilet paper, wash cloths, wall safe, and working air conditioning. It was wonderful being able to cool down after a hot and humid day of sightseeing. The bathrooms are modern and the plumbing worked great while we were there. (Warning if this is your first trip to Cuba: you cannot flush toilet paper in the toilet; it must be kept in a receptacle. This is the same as every other bathroom we visited in Cuba. Luckily, the unit is cleaned daily.) The balcony offers a glimpse from above of life on the streets in Havana and we enjoyed sitting there each evening with a beer, people-watching. Both bedrooms have refrigerators—a small one and a larger one for snacks, water, and whatever else you might need. There are plates and a few serving pieces, as well as silverware. We didn’t ever use the toaster, but the microwave worked for us. The apartment’s two biggest assets as far as we’re concerned: its location and its manager, Carlos. First, the location: the apartment is only a couple of blocks from Plaza Vieja, with its bars, restaurants and lively square. We felt safe walking to and from the apartment to the Plaza, even at night. (Admittedly, we were not out very late, but we were out after dark.) Our favorite restaurant/bar was Azucar, on the second floor of one of the buildings in the Plaza. It has a balcony, so you can eat and drink while watching the goings-on in the square. The wait-staff was friendly and fun. Another favorite right off the Plaza was La Vitrola. The music was great and it was another fun place to enjoy a drink and a meal outside. Now, to the biggest asset of Las Mercedes B & B: Carlos Hernandez. Carlos is a concierge in the true meaning of the word. No request was too difficult for him to fulfill. He gave us restaurant recommendations; offered to arrange tours; arranged transportation to and from the apartment; went on beer and water runs; and suggested the best markets for art and other goods. He came by daily to see if we needed anything and to ask about our day. He gave us the use of a cell phone so that we could call him any time we needed anything. We tried not to abuse his good nature, but it was wonderful to have someone navigate Havana for us, saving us valuable time to sightsee and interact with the wonderful Cuban people. Las Mercedes would be...

This property is exceptional. It is upscale, modern, clean, comfortable and safe. The standards at this place are consistent with what you would find in any modern upscale property anywhere else. Don't let the street or the entry fool you. The street and entry would suggest a low quality, unattractive and undesirable place to stay. But like so many places in Cuba, the interiors are so dramatically different. In addition, the location is outstanding. Close to the Plaza de Armas and the San Jose market, you can walk in less than 5 minutes to some of the best shopping and restaurants in Old Havana. If you want to immerse yourself in Old Havana without having the crowds and noise of the city, then this property to the south of the city center is ideal. Finally, the owner Carlos is very accommodating and will work with you regarding recommendations, check in , check out and transportation to and from the airport.

By far the nicest casa we stayed in Cuba. Modern construction, super clean, minisplit AC, and the only place with water pressure in the shower! Great location in the hear of Habana Vieja.
