Perfil de usuario de Kyle & Chris

The two owners of both the Lazy monkey and The Drunken Monkey Hostel, Chris and Kyle, originally from the UK and Canada respectively, met many moons ago on South Molle Island. A stunning remote little island in the Whitsunday's in Australia on what was agreed by both to be a wonderful and life changing travel experience, that sparked a series of events that would lead to the creation of the Drunken Monkey Hostel.

Many people have visited the hostel and always ask the same question...

“How in the world did you end up here?” Well, to answer that question, this is how the story began.

Kyle, originally from Toronto, Canada, spent his youth mostly playing hockey, skiing, fishing and camping. With his love of the outdoors and continual need to “Fix things” He eventually trained and studied as a mechanical engineer, and quickly moved to the mountains of BC (British Columbia) to work with helicopters. With regular trips to Nelson and holidays down on the beaches of Cuba, Central America and the United States, he was quickly enticed by the travel bug. A now experienced helicopter engineer and avid skier, he decided to leave the world of the working man and mix it up in the world of long term travelling. Kyle would go on to spend a few years travelling and working in Australasia and South East Asia, finally landing in Europe where he would spend three years working for the illustrious Flying Pig Hostel in Amsterdam. The fun and excitement of hostel life had begun. After various excursions through Europe and the Balkans, the dream of running his own hostel started to become a reality.

Chris, who began travelling at a very young age, began his life living in sunny South Africa where he learned his love for the ocean. But the days filled with endless sunshine were short lived when eventually he had to move back and settled in Cambridge, England. After University, Chris began his career in hospitality. Training hard and working his way up through the ranks of management to run very successful bars, pubs and restaurants around Cambridge and London. But his love for the sun and sea still stirred in the back of his mind and quickly drove him pick up a surfboard at a young age, where he could spend countless hours chasing his love for the waves. He would soon leave the waters of Cornwall and the Welsh coastline in search of new adventure to surf the seas of southern France and Spain with friends, which soon set in motion a course of trips around the world. With many visits to the Balearic Islands of Spain, Portugal, Turkey, a world trip was destined to come, and in 2005 Chris packed his backpack and surfboard and headed to the other side of the world. Travelling and working in Australia and South East Asia. Chris fell in love with the Asian culture and stayed over a year, and now continues to visit continent every year.

In the beginning

The foreign lifestyle had quickly become a reality when old friends Kyle and Chris sat in a pub garden with a business plan and an idea to open up their new hostel chain. The decision to move abroad and to start a successful business is something that many people dream about, but struggle to adjust in what they called 'floating in the dreaded wind of change'.

From 2009 to 2010, the normality of everyday life was going to be very different. 'You guys are crazy', or 'it will never work', 'see you back here in 6 months', were the words from many people and acquaintances back home. The chorus of words from Chris and Kyle were saying the complete opposite. 'A new lifestyle, new career, excitement and adventurous times ahead'. After two years of strenuous market research, house hunting, studying foreign laws, technical requirements and labouring for 6 months, the boys finally started the dream. The Drunken Monkey doors opened in the summer of 2011 and the dream began. Three seasons later they are even more successful than they had imagined back in that pub garden many moons ago.

Chris and Kyle

'The adventure is a work in progress. The lifestyle is amazing, and we still are full of enthusiasm and ideas, and are always looking at new opportunities. There is still more to come!”
