Bulian Homestay is a truly special place. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there, except that it was too short. The property is beautiful, the room clean and comfortable, and Gede and his family were gracious and welcoming. We felt immediately "at home." The location was ideal for us, as we were on a tour of north and west Bali. We did an easy morning trip over to Sekumpul waterfalls, and they were absolutely breathtaking! (Although the climb down [and back up] is a bit strenuous. Worth it for the views! But be prepared for a LOT of steps.) We also had the privilege of participating in the English Club that Gede sponsors. It was an incredible experience, and one that I hope to have again soon! I wholeheartedly recommend staying at the Bulian Homestay for at least a night or two, longer if possible. I feel "closer" to Bali for having stayed there.

We had a truly wonderful time at this lovely homestay! Removed from the bustle of tourists and tucked away in the mountains, the accommodations are extremely nice and well maintained. Beautiful rooms are surrounded by fruit trees, thoughtfully maintained garden and koi ponds. The owners were so friendly and made us feel incredibly welcome, even greeting is with fresh coconuts. Definitely stay for dinner, a sampling of real local food, it was delicious! We would definitely stay here again.

We did not meet Gede (who was away on business but accessible by phone), but we had the great pleasure of meeting his wonderful family. While his parents spoke little English, they were patient with my halting Indonesian. His son, Benny, spoke beautiful English (he helped with translations, so not to worry), and was lots of fun. Don't challenge him to chess- he WILL beat you! The food Mam cooked was outstanding; the rooms were the perfect place to rest after a grueling trip to Kintamani; the village was quiet, and for once, tourist-free. If you want a warm, friendly, and authentic home environment, this is the place. Bulian is tiny, and surrounded by gorgeous, out-of-the-way villages. Villagers practiced their English where they could, and enthusiastically invited us to chat, to have drinks, to come to their houses and celebrations, to explore their favorite places in the area. We planned on staying one night, but stayed for three, because we had the luxury of a comfortable and clean home to hunker down in, as well as the option to ride our on our motorbike and explore. If you're planning on staying in Bulian, I recommend your explorations take you East, not West, and turn down the nameless dirt roads whenever possible. Your new friends await!

We stayed two nights at Gede's and it was just wonderful! The moment you arrive you feel as a part of the family. We learned a lot about balinese culture and were living next to the dschungel. The breakfast was the best we have eaten in our whole asia trip! Would absolutely recommend this place!

The good stuff: 1. The place is pretty secluded, making it a nice place for a getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. 2. Gede's mom cooks really nice nasi goreng! 3. Gede's family members are all real nice and friendly and welcoming, and although they speak limited English, they make the effort to greet and talk to us here and there. 4. You can take nature walks around here, and there are some waterfalls nearby that you can visit (though we didn't manage to due to time constraints). The cons: 1. Wifi was hardly usable -- my own mobile data was faster -- but if you're looking for a getaway, the lack of contactability might be something nice. However, if you're a traveller trying to figure out where to go next or trying to settle accommodations for the next few days, the lack of wifi connection can be frustrating. 2. The bathroom is partially roofless, and the roofless bit is above the shower area, so while we were showering there was water dripping down from the hole (probably leftover water from rain), and if it was raining then the rainwater would go down there too. This didn't pose too big of a problem for us, but thought to include it here in case it might be an issue for other people. Nonetheless the bathroom was reasonably clean and very spacious. 3. If you're driving your own car, it can be difficult to park on the road outside. Our car was small enough that we were able to somewhat park on their driveway (but this made it impossible for them to close their outer gates, but they didn't seem to mind). 4. Gede's sons could speak a bit of English but the rest of the family members could hardly speak any English. It wasn't too problematic for us because I can speak Indonesian, but it might be troublesome if you don't have anyone in the group who can speak the language. We never met Gede (the host) because he wasn't around when we stayed at this airbnb so we cannot comment on him as a host. He was unreachable by phone when we arrived at the place, but he was relatively responsive over airbnb prior to that and answered our questions well. Overall it was a good experience however :)
