I'm not sure where to even begin, but unfortunately this was not a pleasant experience to say the least. Before I start, you should know that this is 100% true despite whatever story Liane makes up in response to this.
First, Liane wasn't there to greet us. We stood outside for 10 minutes until a man came outside and asked if we were there for the apartment. Second, despite this being advertised as a whole home/apartment, it is really a shared room as part of her house. She has divided up her house into 3 units (the basement which she also rents out, the main section of the house where I assume she lives, and part of the upstairs which is this listing). This "apartment" consists of a medium size tv room/kitchen and small bedroom/bathroom. So despite pictures showing the large front yard or backyard, we were not offered access to these, and in fact they were blocked off with chairs and other objects.
Apart from this not being advertised correctly, the next part of my complaint is security. This unit and the basement unit share an entryway through the garage. However, while we were given a garage opener, we were not given a key to our specific door within the garage. The basement tenant had the same garage opener but used a different door, so there was no way to lock our door when we left. Also, as we were exploring our unit, we noticed there was a door connecting our tv room to Liane's section of the house. This wasn't locked and we felt unsafe from that regard as well.
Next, on the first night when we came back from dinner, we witnessed the tail end of an encounter between Liane and her basement tenant whereby Liane kidnapped (or "dognapped") the tenant's dog until the tenant and his family packed up and left. According to Liane, the dog "broke through the door" and entered her section of the house while the basement tenant was at dinner. This clearly isn't true, based on the fact that the door to the basement was locked and she admitted no damage was done. It's way more likely she was paranoid and went into the basement without permission, which gets back to my issue about security.
Then, Liane was so scared that the dog "MIGHT" pee and poop in her house, she refused to give the dog up until they left (even while we were all waiting outside and there was no further risk of the dog peeing in her house). The police came and eventually the dog was given back to his owner. Both the basement tenant and we left for a nearby hotel, and were given full refunds (not by Liane, but thankfully AirBnB did the right thing). While our experience with Liane was terrible, we will certainly use AirBnB again. If I were you, I'd stay away, especially if you have a dog, but probably either way...
