The cottage at Hospitalfields provides basic accommodation at a pleasingly eccentric location in an arts community on lovely grounds. The bedrooms are comfortable and the house is clean, and the hosts are welcoming with flowers and a tour of the arts centre. However the living area is not really suited for a long stay, as there is no sofa (only 2 armchairs) and the dining table seats only 4-5 people. Also, while the kitchen is of good size, it lacks some basic utensils and pots for cooking for larger groups. While the grounds are wonderful, it should be known that the house is cut off from the beach by a railway line, requiring a walk towards town to use the underpass (but only about a 10-15 minute walk away). Finally, the wifi did not work for most of our visit, although the hosts expressed surprise at this and said that it generally worked well. As the location is in town, there is 3G and 4G signal. All in all, recommended for those interested in the arts project at Hospitalfields and the wonderful eccentric main house, or wanting a base on the east coast for lovely walking. The hosts mean well and are very enthusiastic about the arts centre, which is a great project. The cottage itself is clean and tidy and just needs a bit more attention to provide a comfortable basic place for a longer stay, particularly for groups over 4-5 people.
What a truly unique location this is. If you are interested in History, Art or just want to stay somewhere really different then Hospitalfields is the place to come. We were staying over the Christmas period and were shown every kindness when we arrived, exhausted after a long drive from the South East of England. A beautifully decorated christmas tree was in the living room and a guided tour was provided of the amazing main building. The surrounding grounds are a delight - removing you from any feeling of being in a town and yet there is a supermarket and fast-food outlets 5 minutes walk down the hill. The facilities are very basic but if you are looking for somewhere large enough to accommodate up to 8 people and has the feeling of a simple cottage - set within the grounds of a grand house - then this is the place to come!
