If you are a large group of close-knit friends or family, then Nellsbells is a lovely place to spend a few night in Clarens. It is located right next to Main Street and all the shops/restaurants/galleries and an easy drive to Golden Gate National Park. We managed to go for some lovely hikes that were only a few minutes walk away, so the location couldn't have been better.
As we were visiting in winter, the open fireplace in the house was a very welcome addition and we enjoyed evenings by the fire. All of the beds were equipped with electric blankets and extra blankets on top so we were always toasty and comfortable. There is plenty of seating so all 8 of us could sit together, whether it be in front of the TV or at the dinner table.
The house is very characterful and although it doesn't have a modern, magazine worthy aesthetic, it is very cosy and fits in with the style of Clarens. However, the house is very creaky and noise travels easily. A sound made downstairs can easily sound like it is right next to you when you are upstairs in bed, so light-sleepers beware!
We were provided with information on the local area and things to do, and although the house didn't have any wifi, there was a great TV options, loads of books, and a piano for entertainment in the evenings. The house is stocked up with enough crockery, cutlery, cooking equipment, extra mattresses, towels etc, so we were never worried about not having the basics.
The communication wasn't as personal as it is with some Airbnb's, and a local information centre dealt with most of the requests we had, including checking-in and out, but they were extremely friendly and professional. When we first arrived we had an issue with the alarm system, but after calling the number given to us, within 5 minutes a lovely man drove over and switched it off. Again, when we had problems with the hot water in the cottage building separate from the main house, someone quickly came to try and help us sort the problem. Although our visit would have been better had these issues not occurred, we were pleased with the response we got in the attempt to resolve them.
Overall, Nellsbells was a nice place to spend a few nights, and if we were to visit as a big group in the future, we would definitely consider staying again.
