Why stay in a place like all the others when you are on an adventure to get away from the same old routine? This place is both comfortable and unique in a beautiful, natural setting and has all the conveniences you might need -- a great home base for your exploration of the east side of the island.
When you stay at Koda’s Place you will be in your own “house” with a private, covered deck providing a view going back hundreds of feet into a gorgeous 2 acre yard undulating with the natural contours of ancient lava flows. The tropical foliage includes many coconut trees and other palms, an orange, tangerine and pomelo tree, and an avocado tree (in season November-March) growing just steps from your door. When it rains the ducks love to play in the large pond that forms right by the deck. There is off street parking just 20-feet from the building.
The uniquely designed interior is packed with special features. Here is what you will find in the combined kitchen/living area:
100-inch projection TV home theater with a 540 watt surround sound system, DVR, and satellite TV.
Super comfy leather love seat with separate recliners.
Dozens of great movies on disk and on the DVR.
High speed internet access (the bandwidth is limited so you need to check with me before streaming audio or video).
There is also a futon which can sleep up to 2 additional guests, but you should be aware that access to the bathroom is through the bedroom.
The kitchen area features a full sized fridge, microwave, toaster oven, crockpot, 2-burner gas stove, knife set, cutting boards, toaster, blender, electric can opener, pots and pans, dishes, silverware, wine glasses, corkscrew, etc., and the kitchen table has 4, soft swivel chairs. I also supply free coffee, tea and popcorn, and I try to keep things stocked with basic condiments.
You get free access to the new front-loading washer/dryer with supplied laundry detergent and softener. I also supply a blow dryer and curling iron, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, even a toothbrush if you need it.
The awesome bathroom has a mirrored wall, black granite floor tile, marble tile on the tub/shower surround, an infinity light in the ceiling, a black granite vanity top and a white marble sink that changes color as it is lit from below with LED lights.
The bedroom has a super comfy, pillow-topped queen-size bed, black light posters and a ceiling which has been hand painted with a galaxy and stars that glow under 3 black lights. There is a 39-inch wall mounted TV connected to a BD/DVD player, and a glass topped desk with a 6 speaker computer sound system.
I am always making improvements to the yard and have plans to install subtle outdoor lighting you will be able to control from the deck. I have begun work on a waterfall and pond inside the area where the driveway makes a loop which I hope to have done this summer, and a fire pit with ohia log benches should be finished very soon.
The location couldn’t be better when it comes to seeing all the great places there are to visit here, including free tours inside the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea (tours must be booked in advance online); hiking trails, steam vents and the Kilauea crater in Volcano National Park; Rainbow Falls in Hilo; Akaka Falls (the highest in Hawaii) north of Hilo; snorkeling in tide pools at Kapoho; a clothing optional beach (Kehena) on the southeast coast, Coconut Island and a gorgeous park on Hilo Bay, and much more. On Wednesday nights Uncle Roberts in Kalapana features free live music and dancing which always draws large crowds of both locals and tourists. Lava is currently flowing into the ocean on the south coast. I supply snorkeling equipment for two, beach chairs, beach towels, coolers and umbrellas. The closest grocery store is 4 miles away in Keaau. Safeway, Walmart and Target are just 20 minutes away in Hilo.
I provide a guide book, _Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed_, so you can discover even more things to see and do here.
If you read the reviews you will see how everyone has truly enjoyed their stay in my unique little hideaway, and it keeps getting better here all the time.
The place is located in Orchidland, 5 miles from the ocean at an elevation of roughly 500 feet, about 10 miles south of the Hilo airport, and it is very easy to get to. From the airport the first light you come to is Highway 11 (Kanoelehua Ave.). You make a left turn onto that road and travel south about 5 miles (8km), then just before you get to Keaau you make a left onto Highway 130 heading toward Pahoa. Continue south on 130 about 4 miles (6km) to where the shoulder lane ends, then make a right turn onto Pohaku Drive. My place is on the left about 1.2 (2km) miles up the road. Look for a brown and white house with a rock-walled pond in front. Unlike many vacation rentals in this area there are paved roads all the way.
I am 63-years-old, a writer, musician, inventor and all around creative type very much into metaphysics and progressive politics. I use the name Koda for all my public work, which can be found at my personal site, kodasplace. I live in the house on the opposite side of the separate building you will be staying in and currently spend nearly all my time and money maintaining and improving this place. I like my privacy and you can be sure I will respect yours. I can be your interesting new friend in Hawaii or the guy you rarely see unless you need something. You can count on me to do everything I can to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Thank you for considering Koda’s Place as the centerpiece of your escape to Hawaii.
Mahalo! (thank you)

You have access to the laundry room and entire yard, but the ground is very uneven so shoes are recommended.

The ducks like to sit on the driveway, but if you drive slowly they WILL get out of the way.
Smoking is allowed only outside the buildings and butts must be put in trash. Dishes must be washed and put away before you check out. Internet bandwidth is limited so you need to check with me before doing video chat, and no Netflix or audio streaming is generally allowed. (I pay $120/mo. for 30GB of high speed bandwidth over the Verizon wireless network and they charge $15 per GB over the 30 GB limit.)
I am an intellectual, primarily a writer and musician, open minded and very much into metaphysics. I live alone in the house next to the rental and seem to spend way too much time trying to wrestle the yard away from the rainforest :) I moved here from Utah in 2013 to escape the cold. Dogs and kids seem to like me a lot, and I consider that a great character reference.
