Quiet and relaxing space. All of the rooms can be separated by sliding doors. This house has a 3 guest maximum occupancy with 1 double futon set available and/or 2 single futon sets available (dependent on number of reserved guests). This is an old Japanese house, in a quiet old neighborhood, simple and charming. It is comfortable for those not seeking luxury or a modern environment, and for those who prefer something quirky to something smooth and polished. Because it is an older house, with attached garden, it is sometimes difficult to keep all of nature outside--we have repellents on hand, but you may see some insects. Please be warned: It can be a bit cold and difficult to heat thoroughly during the winter months, as well as the opposite during the summer. There is one air conditioning/heating unit installed in the main room, and a portable heater available for the smaller room. There is also a new gas heater installed, that can provide additional warmth for the central area of the house. The toilet is located in a room that is technically outside the house, as you must first open a sliding glass door and there is a wooden door around 10 centimeters from there.
Disponible para huéspedes
This is an independent house, and the group or persons booking this listing have private access to the entire space. Host lives in a separate house nearby, not in rental house. The house includes equipped kitchen, washing machine, wi-fi, private garden, and 2 bicycles. Additional bicycles may be provided according to availability, number of guests, and scheduling. Please be sure to book the correct number of guests in your party, even if traveling with children, as we will only prepare the number of futon beds in relation to the number of guests booked.
Atención a los huéspedes
As needed :-) I am a native English speaker, with some Japanese ability, living nearby. I'm happy to provide information about the area, but I am also a teacher and busy animal welfare enthusiast, so prefer more independent travelers. Volunteers for our animal welfare group (and assisting with the guesthouses) stay right across the street. They will likely be helping at check-in, and are often available to help or advise.

Due the very quite neighborhood, we require all guests to check in before 9pm. If you are delayed for any reason at all, and hope to check in after 9pm, you will need to pay a late fee on arrival, to cover extra staff costs. Neighbors in the area do not speak English (though host is Native American), so knowing a few Japanese words to greet people on the street with, would be very welcome.
It is important to note (again) that this is an old wooden Japanese house and impossible to heat thoroughly in colder months. It can also be a bit damp. While localized heating sources and warm bedding are supplied, guests who find cold particularly intolerable may not be comfortable. We have other houses, so please compare this listing with The Zen Kyoto Machiya, The Charming Kyoto Machiya, The Merry Vegetarian Machiya, The Cozy Kyoto Cottage, and The Peaceful Kyoto Bungalow.
Because of the private nature of the house and garden, it can feel like a small world unto itself. But, this is an older quiet neighborhood, so it's very important to be mindful of not being noisy. Moreover, this is a Machiya (a wooden row house), so your neighbors are just a thin wall away in some places. Talking and living quietly is a very important aspect of respecting your neighbors' comfort and privacy. Guests must use quiet voices at all times, especially in the evening, and also while walking in the neighborhood streets. Please take extra care when pulling suitcases through the streets after 8pm, as the noise can disturb neighbors. If you are traveling with children, please monitor noise levels carefully. Pets must be discussed with us before you book. There is no smoking anywhere inside the house or private garden. Trash and recyclables must be separated and disposed of according to city regulations, as displayed on the house trash bins. We keep costs down by employing a minimal cleaning service. For this to continue, the house should be left clean and tidy (NO UNWASHED DISHES, left, for example). Bicycles are provided for use at your own risk, and must be replaced by guests if lost, damaged, or stolen. Any damages to house, items, and/or any extra cleaning fees necessary, must be paid for by guests. ***Guests who arrive after 9pm for any reason at all must pay a late fee on arrival, to cover extra costs. The fee will be 2,000 yen from 9pm to 12am, and 5,000 yen from 12am to 9am.***
