The central column in the main floor resembles a tree, created by Maya artist Ambrosio Cholotio. All tiles were hand painted in Antigua Guatemala and San Antonio Aguas Claientes. The cool breeze from the lake blends with the sunny days to give this cabin an exquisite temperature. With a big garden and private dock, it is a great place for family and friends to join the fun.

Currently we can not interact much with our guests, as we had to move to Guate City for the right schooling our kids needed. We come to San Juan on weekends and holiday, and can plan to meet with our guests if they want to. However, our long-time friends and neighbors are still around and are lovely people you'll also get to interact with.

THIS IS A TROPICAL SETTING, and bugs are inevitable. We have placed screens in the windows, but if you leave the windows or doors open for just a minute with the lights on, you will have hundreds of light bugs on your floor in seconds. Please also be aware that local 'alacranes' (small scorpions) inhabit the lake cose to rocks or wood piles. Some may enter the house. We clean throroughly every day, but you need to be mindful that it is a possibility you find one of these critters around the property.

La hora de llegada es flexible

No smoking allowed inside the house (but O.K. in the Veranda and open-air areas), no hairy pets allowed inside the house (i.e., the garden is big enough for having dogs live outside, and in the patio areas). We expect our guests to take good care of the house (especially mindful of the wooden floor), and to be cordial to our local community. Please do not throw the toilet paper inside the toilets, special bins are provided (this is an ecological house and the water separation method underground gets clogged if paper is thrown inside). New rules by the Municipality of San Juan town request the garbage to be separated (organic/inorganic), so we thank you for using the separate garbage bins in the kitchen area. If you wish to do a bonfire, please check with Jose (the guardian) the area in the property designated for this purpose.

The location of Monica's cabin is unique and the garden, so lovingly attended by Jose is a massive plus. You definitely feel much more part of the community here than staying in any of the hotels. It was fun to cook from the well stocked local market. House could definitely do with a house manual to help make arranging trips, kayak rentals easier however gardener Jose was very helpful despite our poor Spanglish.

The cabin was a nice, clean, comfortable place to stay for the five nights we were there, having sufficient bedding and bath towels. The balcony with its hammock on the second floor was our favorite place to sit and enjoy the breeze and view of the lake and the cabin grounds themselves. The location is great, just a couple of minutes walk to the main dock for a lancha and the shops, yet far enough away to not be disturbed by its traffic. We only had to wait up to 15 mins for a lancha to San Pedro (Q10/person), San Marcos (Q20) and Pana (Q25). Jose the groundskeeper was there to meet us and let us in through the front gate when we arrived. He was very nice and helpful and only speaks Spanish. He gave us his phone number in case we needed to contact him. He also checked in on us throughout the week. It's not difficult, but the main thing Jose shows you is how to start the on-demand, gas hot water heater. You'll need matches or a lighter, which we had fortunately brought with us. I'm not sure if Jose would have provided matches, or if you'd have to buy them at the tienda. To start the water heater, you first need to light the pilot light by turning the nozzle to the right to the exact spot where you're able to FULLY depress it and start the flow of gas. You can then light the three pilot flames while keeping the nozzle depressed for about 1 minute until it's warm enough for the pilot to stay lit. Now when you turn on the sink or shower water, the main burner will light and heat the water as it flows through the pipe. When you turn the water off, the burner will also shut off. This often times causes the pilot light to blow out, so you'll need to relight it if you again want hot water. The pilot light will also eventually go out if the water is not used for awhile. We also lit the gas stove burners with our lighter when we cooked. We never used the oven. Janet the housekeeper came by an hour or two after we arrived to give us our house keys. She was very nice and helpful, and she only speaks Spanish. She also gave us her phone number in case we needed anything. We spent half an hour on a quiet walk down the beach one afternoon to view the various, interesting farm plots and houses. The beach is more rocky than sandy, with a fair amount of litter, so you won't want to be barefoot. It also doesn't appear to be a good place to swim along this beach. This seems to be the true for the whole lake, not just this beach, with maybe a couple of exceptions. Bugs were not a problem during the day, inside or out, so we were able to open...

This place was wonderful!! Me, my wife and our 2 young boys stayed for a week. The cabin is crafted with considerable skill and reminds me of a Swiss Family Robinson tree house! Very beautiful. Was super nice to have a private yard for the kids to run around in! Bird lovers will be in heaven. I saw 5 "lifer's" in the first hour, including: great looks at rufous sabrewing, blue-throated motmot, grey-collared becard, and tons of warblers. Mornings were spent watching birds from the deck with a fresh cup of local grown and roasted coffee! What a treat!
