I had a "first career" as an environmental, economic justice and human rights advocate, leading conservation programs and river protection organizations in Marin County, the "Yuba Watershed" and internationally (primarily in Asia, Latin America and Africa). I've lived, traveled, worked and studied in dozens of countries and cultures.
Having returned to my "hometown" of Nevada City with my wife Tania and our teenage daughter, I now split my time between hosting guests, managing a flower farm, and volunteering with community organizations.
Having first hosted AirBnb guests when living in Berkeley years ago (when AirBnb was truly a "sharing economy" experience, sharing our bathroom and kitchen with visitors from all over the world), we've evolved our hospitality operation to include a number of distinctive and high quality accommodations in Nevada City and environs. Both in our own Victorian-era home in downtown Nevada City--and in partnership with friends and family who own and steward scenic agricultural, forest and stream-side properties outside of town--we aim to provide our guests with an exceptional and memorable experience while visiting Nevada City and South Yuba River.
Jason was raised in Nevada City and we bought this grand 1880 Victorian when it wasn't so grand in 2005, and have now put over a decade of love, care and resources into making it our family home to share with friends and guests.
We are water people who advocate for healthy rivers and social justice issues locally and around the world. For six years, Jason was director of the local river advocacy organization, SYRCL (including the Wild & Scenic Film Festival), and Tania was director of the Yuba Watershed Institute, founded by Gary Snyder and others.
In addition to these extensive relationships with local people and place, we both have also led international organizations: Tania primarily supporting popular education in Latin America and Jason's work with International Rivers was global in scope. Jason's attention is now focused on the home, garden, family, guests and local projects, while Tania works very full-time as a public policy facilitator throughout California.
We have a 15 year old daughter who enjoys pottery, poetry and just about any new and interesting experience. We love gardening, travel, books, exploring the natural world and adventures of all kinds.
While hesitant to claim fluency in any language, we can make conversation in Spanish, Russian, Italian and Shona, can read some French and have translation dictionaries for Swahili and Indonesian languages!
