>200 airbnb/trip advisor +ve comments over 12 years tells it all. Total off season travel cost from £100 return!

Looking out north across sheltered Sinclair Bay towards Orkney and the Pentland Skerries lighthouse, this fully equipped, foreshore cottage has unforgetable sea views. As the tide comes in across the sheltered bay, you could be watching a living oil painting of the ocean surf.

Orcas are regularly visible, seabirds and seals abound and guests do sometimes even see our shy sea otter.

It might seem far north but is still south of all of Norway and is well worth the two hours scenic seaside journey on the road up from lnverness. Don't miss the Store House restaurant (M-Sat 9-6, Sun 10-5) just 12 miles north of the Kessock bridge, or Dunrobin Castle near Golspie.

For those who enjoy eating out there are in Wick several excellent local hotels and even a gourmet French restaurant. (Greetings to Andre) McKays friendly hotel (give Rupert's personal greetings to Murray) holds the Guinness book record for the "Shortest street in the world"

Further afield in Scrabster (20 miles) both the Upper Deck and the distinctively ethical Captain's Galley ("Which" Best Fish Restaurant in the UK: 2008) are highly recommended - The Castle of Mey and Gringoe / Sinclair castle are well worth visits while the hinterland is a major bird sanctuary. Thurso has a world class surfing beach. Wick has regular sea boat/harbour festival and fly-ins for light aircraft. lf you love the sea and tranquillity this is the place for you to sit reading by a traditional open fire or to go for shoreline walks. At high tide, with only the sea and the surf visible through the French doors; you could even be at sea without seasickness. Being East coast midges are virtually never a problem, yet facing west, the view from the kitchen of the sun setting over "Ackergill Towers" (try googling it and compare the prices!) with every wave of a high tide being tinged with pink has to be seen to be believed.

But if you in the light of all this beauty you still need the internet, there is free Wi-F in both Sea Shore and Sea Otter Cottages. As in so many places in the Highlands the quality varies. Hopefully you will find enough enjoyment of the location for this not to be too big a problem, and for some even an advantage. If messages are essential good Wi-Fi access is available in Weatherspoons in the centre of town, or in the foyer of McKays or the Norseman hotels.

If requested, an ink-jet printer/photocopier/scanner can be provided.

Travel: Direct by air to Wick from Aberdeen or Edinburgh and hire a car from Richard's friendly local garage. Alternatively fly to lnverness airport (direct, low cost flights from Luton, Gatwick, Heathrow, Liverpool, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle), or else travel more sedately up to Wick by coach or by the comfortable scenic train.

Dónde vas a estar

Ackergill, Reino Unido

Wonderful Caithness - Track down their website. No mountains but also (unlike the West coast of Scotland) virtually never any midges. Fantastic sunsets over the castle a field away next door. Google Ackergill Tower for another website with lots of local info. One of Britain's best beaches a short walk away

I am, now aged 78, a "retired" NHS consultant (in maternity care, gynaecology and healthcare IT)

I was born in Famagusta, Cyprus, in 1941 in a house which being in the no-mans land between Greek and Turkish Cyprus, has probably remained untouched for over 40 years. My ancestors were almost all British for generations. My father for most of his career worked for the "Colonial Medical Service, first in Cyprus and then in Aden (Yemen) and finally in Bahrain. He was fluent in French, German, Greek, Arabic with a bit of Persian & Turkish

When I was 3 month old until aged two my mother and I were refugees in South Africa. My first memory was when aged two I met my father in Suez

Years before the concept of gluten sensitivity was identified, my mother was extremely ill, and one of my first recorded saying was that "I want to be a doctor when I grow up and try to make Mummy better"

As a result of a positive Christian upbringing, I came to the conclusion that my motive in life was to get high in the medical profession and use my talents and income for the benefit of others. As a result of this "life motto" and an amazing life pattern involving way above average risks, I was married to my first wife for over 30 years, three daughters and 6 grandchildren in Vancouver & New Zealand I thus now have hundreds of good memories but probably fewer assets that any other retired NHS consultant. Running two popular holiday cottages (which have been a massive money pit) gives me a continuing purpose in life with hundreds of about 90% happy guests in the North of Scotland for the past 12 years.

Our home is in Leighton Buzzard - near Milton Keynes - which is a long way from our two very popular airbnb year round self-catering “Sea Otter Cottage” and “Sea Shore Cottage” in the very north of Scotland near John O’Groats; in a small village called Ackergill.

Try googling for pictures of the Northern Lights from there.

As a retired person with a Senior Travel-card I find I can leave home at around 8.30 am, and arrive in Wick (only 2 miles from the cottages) at around 11 pm, having all day relaxed/worked on my websites using Wi-Fi/caught up on reading/chatted to fellow travellers. I only need to change trains at Milton Keynes, Edinburgh (Haymarket rather than Waverley) and Inverness. No long queues for security. Low season cost for return travel £120. A really great day.

Alternatively I can fly from Luton to Inverness for as little as £35 return
Leaving Luton at 9.30am and arriving in Inverness at 12am
I can then relax on the train which leaves at 2pm and arrived in Wick at 2pm for only £25 return. Only 2 miles from Wick railway station and a massive Tesco supermarket to the two cottages

Highly recommended

In my "anecdotage" I enjoy this much more that sitting at home watching TV etc. Especially since, unfortunately, my 3 daughters, and my 6 grandchildren and 4 step grandchildren live in Vancouver and New Zealand.

To see why I am still involved in healthcare IT try entering “Rupert Fawdry” on youtube.

The location is so fantastic at any time of year, rather than leave the cottages empty I am open to last minute offers at any price you can afford.n Check the website. Maybe you could pay for a special low cost winter break for an elderly relative.

Now "retired" and living near London due to continuing work on the Wisdam project. But as the feedback confirms I try to make sure with our guest very concientiously both by e-mails and even by international phone calls I am more than happy to enjoy their visit as much as possible. Being "retired" I try to make sure that all our guests can phone me anytime, but preferably between 8 am and 11 pm, if they have any questions whatsoever.
