The Space

Whether you are visiting Kauai for a few days, a few weeks, or even a few months, this cute studio apartment surrounded by tropical vegetation and whimsical statues and art objects will quickly make you feel settled and “at home’. It’s part of a small and friendly residential community full of Aloha spirit. You can arrive, move in, unpack and unwind -- or head straight to the beach.

The price includes the 13.4% vacation rental tax. There are no "extras" you have to pay -- no “amenity fees,” no resort fees, no wi-fi fees, no “energy” fees, no parking fees – and no kidding.

This is not a “condo-hotel” room. It’s a self-contained apartment with a high ceiling and a complete kitchen. It’s ideal for two people. It’s fully furnished and equipped and artistically decorated with granite counter tops, etched glass, mirrors, indirect lighting, and marble floor inserts that will remind you of Italy.

The kitchen has a dishwasher, microwave and full-size refrigerator. The bed is a custom-made queen-size chest bed with storage drawers underneath (made of wood – no formaldehyde). There are ceiling fans in the living/sleeping area and the kitchen, and – for hot tropical days and nights – air conditioning. The bathroom has a stall shower.

The Immediate Neighborhood:

The apartment community has a unique ambiance. There’s an outdoor table and stone seats among the trees near the entrance, where you can relax, drink coffee, or sit and chat with other residents. There’s a gazebo, barbecue facility, and open space in the field adjacent to the property.
Several washers and dryers are on site. Off-street parking is available for your use.

We have several bikes you can use (no charge), and the oceanside bike/hike trail is 2 blocks away.

The Kauai bird

As you may know, the entire island of Kauai has an abundance of wild roosters and chickens, and they love hanging around near the property. The roosters tend to be quiet in the evening after it gets dark (when they roost), but they are prone to wake up and crow at odd hours during the night. Some people sleep right through it from Day 1, others say they get used to it after 1-2 nights - especially if they have busy, active days and are zonked out by the time they go to bed. We can't do anything about the roosters' body clocks, but we do provide our guests with hermetically sealed packages of earplugs for sleeping! Also running the AC and/or fans during the night helps to block out the crowing sound. Some find the chickens and roosters charming (we've seen many of our guests photographing them!) Other people find them annoying. But they are a fact of life in Kauai. We ask our guests not to feed them or encourage them, but they are persistent birds.

One reason the wild chickens and roosters are in such abundance in Kauai is that there were 2 hurricanes (in 1982 and 1992) and domesticated fowl escaped and bred. Unlike Maui and other Hawaiian islands, Kauai never let the mongoose (chicken predator) in to the island.

Kapa’a:

It’s the largest city on the island, although it is a “village” compared with any major mainland city. Kapa’a is centrally located, friendly and picturesque - as noted by recent articles in the Garden Island newspaper and Forbes magazine. At a pinch, you could get around without a car – walking, biking, or using the local bus service - but a car is important for real exploration at your own pace.

You can walk to many stores, the Kapa’a post office, banks, pharmacies, Cost-U-Less (a local warehouse store), the beach, and eating places. Kapa’a has numerous specialty restaurants & cafes in all directions -- including seafood, burger places, coffee houses, Thai, Mexican, Czech and Indian restaurants as well as local Hawaiian cuisine.

The Island of Kauai:

There is no shortage of guidebooks and good Internet resources describing this piece of Paradise – but you are invited to relax and discover Kauai at your own pace: “Slow down – this ain’t the mainland”.

Interaction:

We enjoy living on Kauai and we have fun with our friends. Our delightful, energetic and friendly manager Milan is assisted by Ida who lives on-site. Both are originally from Slovakia – so if you want to practice your East European language skills, here is your opportunity. With Milan’s and Ida’s help we have managed this apartment for many years. One of them will greet you when you arrive and show you the apartment and the surroundings, and will be available during your stay by phone or e-mail to answer any questions. Otherwise you will have the place entirely to yourself. We don’t disturb you (unless you have a problem), and we don’t put a chocolate on your pillow.

Access:

Kapa’a is about 8 miles north of Lihu’e airport. After you have made your reservation, we will give you specific directions for finding this apartment since it’s well hidden.

For days when you want to sightsee, you can drive easily to the north and south shores of Kauai. When you just want to relax, swim, or body-surf, you can walk to the closest beach (Kapa’a Beach Park) which is a beautiful crescent-shaped stretch of sand and good for swimming since it's protected by an offshore reef. Fuji Beach - also known as "Baby Beach" has shallow calm water and tidepools - great for young children to splash in. Or you can drive a short distance to Lydgate Park or Kealia Beach. Those are good nearby eastside beaches. But be careful -- Kauai is not the languid Caribbean - there are strong waves and potential rip tides at some beaches.

Don’t miss the Kapa’a walk/bike path – Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the “The Path that Goes by the Coast” – there is a great 5-minute video on the web (hint: search Vimeo….). There are several bike rental places in Kapa'a, with reasonable prices. We have a few serviceable (but not fancy) bikes available (see photo) that you can borrow and ride - at your own risk - for the entire 8-mile round trip to the far end of the paved path and back.

We can even arrange to rent you a kayak at a nominal cost for a paddle trip up the Wailua River.

Enjoy the experience of staying in Kapa’a, close to everything - but away from it all!

The fine print:

• Check-in after 3:00 pm, check-out by 11:00 am. Depending on your flight schedule, we can sometimes arrange earlier check-in (11:00 am) and/or late checkout (7:00 pm) for a small fee.
•No smoking anywhere in the apartment or within 20 feet of it.
•This is a residential community, so please, no parties or loud noise -- except near the gazebo at the far end of the grounds.
•And please don't feed the wild chickens or the feral cats. We provide ear plugs if the roosters keep you awake. The fact is chickens are totally out of control and now all over Kauai. The Kauai County council might pass a a law soon requiring every visitor to take two roosters home with them!.

I had a wonderful stay at Margaret’s place. Ida and Arnold met me when I arrived and where both very helpful and communicative. The apartment was very clean and beautifully decorated. The complex also has everything you could need, from bicycles to laundry to beach chairs. I loved being able to wake up early and walk to the beach across the street, and it was very easy to drive to other points of the island as well as the airport which is only 20 minutes away. Kapa’a has a charming main street with shops and restaurants that are a short walk up the road, and there‘s also a grocery store a short walk away. I would love to return to Kauri and stay here again. Highly recommended!

This place is an absolute gem! Walking distance to tons of amazing food, beach, and Kapaa center. Ida helped us get settled and she was very sweet and helpful. We will definitely stay here again during our next visit to Kauai if available.

The apartment is cute and clean. A lot of the art works on the wall, a king size bed with comfortable mattress. It has a big balcony with screens on, so it blocks all the mosquitos out, the balcony also have high chairs and counter for having meals which is very nice. Air conditioner was a big help when we were staying there. It is a full kitchen that we could make some dinner at home sometimes. We love the cats and chickens walking around in the yard, there is a cat with white and yellow hair is very cute, we made friends with him. They also have free bikes to use. We love the place, would love to stay again!

My wife and I just finished spending 12 wonderful nights in Unit 3. We did not meet Margaret, but her property manager, Milan, was very helpful and pleasant. The room was very clean and someone has done a great job of decorating. It is a studio, so the bed doubles as your sofa during the day, but we found that very pleasant. There is a screened lanai where we spent every morning enjoying our coffee and just relaxing. The weather was warm during our stay, so we were very grateful that there is an air conditioner that worked very well. The kitchen is well equipped, and we cooked breakfast most mornings, and even dinner a couple of times. The location is down a gravel road and next to some commercial buildings, but the landscaping screens you from the neighboring buildings and we found it very pleasant. The maintenance crew keeps the property very clean. There were very nice laundry facilities with late model washers and dryers that were free to use. My wife is a real sports fan, so we were pleased that there was a nice TV with cable. She was able to watch all of her games. Also, I used the WIFI quite a bit streaming videos, and that worked just fine. Also, when we first reserved our room, Margaret told us the Milan has some used cars that he rents out. We contacted Milan and arranged for one of those for only $35/day. He picked us up at the airport and turned the car over to us. It was an Acura and drove very well. It had a few scratches, but that is not something we cared about. It was an excellent value. We would definitely go back again. I would even request Unit 3 again, since we loved the lanai for relaxing in the mornings. It was a great stay!

I cannot say enough about Margaret's place. We just spent a truly magical week on Kauai & having this wonderful apartment was a huge part of that. Booking was extremely easy & Margaret's directions were very comprehensive. Milan & Ida were utterly delightful & extremely helpful! They got us to & from the airport, set us up with a rental car, brought us fresh fruit & supplies, & made us feel at home & amongst friends. The apartment was clean & well maintained, & had everything we needed. We prepared meals in the kitchen & ate them on the lanai while enjoying a lovely warm breeze & the enchanting sounds of Kauai. The bed was comfortable & the shower good & hot. We especially appreciated the beach accessories & bikes that were provided along with our rental. Having the option to take what we needed when we needed it & return it when we were done without any contracts or hassles was, for us, a new experience, but one that fits with the generous, mellow vibe of the island. We will truly miss the lush tropical plants, the beautiful, entertaining roosters & hens with their chicks, the short walks or bike rides to the beach to swim in the warm, blue waters or watch the sun rise and/or set, relaxing on the lanai, and all the wonders of the island. We hope to return soon and often.

There is no place on earth quite like Kauai for natural beauty, outdoor activities, and the relaxed tropical island way of life (the Aloha spirit). My husband Jack and I enjoy the eastside bike path where you can cycle, walk, or jog traffic-free for 4+ miles (8 miles round-trip), and taking the dog for a walk by the ocean. We love travel, but we love staying home too. Since Airbnb came into existence, it’s possible to do both at the same time. We offer you a fully furnished tropical Hawaiian-style apartment as your “home from home” during your vacation, in a friendly community – right in town yet away from it all – close to beaches and attractions but with local ambiance.
