Our apartment can comfortably accommodate one to four people (or five, if they want to sleep on a sofa). It is a two bedroom apartment with a double bed (queen size) facing an interior patio and a room with two single (twin) beds with a balcony facing the street onto a lovely plaza with trees, a large sitting room with a balcony onto the same plaza and a window, with cable TV, a large glass table which sits 6 people, a hi-fi, one bathroom with a tub and a kitchen with all the usual amenities (washing machine, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, oven, coffee machine, blender, pots and pans, kitchen utensils, etc.). It is on the top floor (with a lift/elevator) of a 1940s building which looks out onto a plaza, making it amazingly bright and sunny and giving it a great view of the Madrid rooftops and trees. Bed linen and towels included in the price.
We, your hosts Carlos and Lua, are a young couple who own several night clubs in the area as well as being members of Gold Lake, an indie rock band, and this apartment has been their home for the last 10 years. The apartment is equipped with WiFi, air conditioning and central heating.
It is located in the heart of what is called the SOHO of Madrid, Malasaña, an area famous for its creative and countercultural scene. It is a neighborhood similar to Camden Town in London, or the East Village in New York City, although it has it's own flair. Filled with charming outdoor cafes and restaurants, cute boutiques and fashion stores, further up the hill there are nightclubs such as Tupperware (indie music with an amazing decoration!) and bohemian cafes such as Picnic further down the street (addresses below). A block away, up the hill, you'll find Calle Espiritu Santo, Corredera Alta de San Pablo and Plaza San Ildefonso which are bustling with young people out for tapas, trendy cafes, international restaurants and music shops and boutiques.
5 minute walk to la Gran Via, which is like Madrid's Broadway or Regent Street with big stores such as Zara, el Corte Inglés, FNAC, H&M, Blanco, etc. as well as movie theaters and musicals.
This central area is perfect for walking and exploring Madrid's many highlights, such as the Retiro Park, all the museums (Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza, Reina Sofia, Caixa Forum), the Plaza Mayor, Plaza del Sol, and the Gran Via are all within walking distance or a short underground ride away. Close to other neighborhoods such as Chueca, known for its gay friendly bars, or the Barrio de las Letras, where there are succulent tapas and flamenco joints, or La Latina which has become a sort of ethinic melting pot of this capital city.
Nearby, behind Plaza Mayor you'll find a lovely market with tapas called Mercado de San Miguel, offering all the delicious gourmet food you can find in Spain. And walking towards Chueca, on calle Augusto Figeroa, you'll find another succulent market called Mercado de San Antón, which also has the best of Spanish cuisine on display and ready to eat.
