El alojamiento
Let’s start with the basics: How did the farm get its name? After we acquired the property, we knew that the house had been witness to the Battle of Gettysburg. With a little research, we discovered that the soldiers of the 2nd and 3rd divisions, 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac, had marched southward on Chapel Road and took a shortcut through Henry Cromer’s farm (now Crescent-Chapel Farm) during the late morning of July 1, 1863, on their way to Cemetery Hill where the 2nd Division’s troops would build defensive positions. The insignia of the 11th Corps is a crescent moon (a white one for the 2nd Division, and blue for the 3rd Division). When Union soldiers tramped through Cromer’s farm on July 1, the foundation of a derelict and abandoned “Rock Creek Chapel” stood at the intersection of Chapel Road and present-day Barlow Road.

Crescent-Chapel Farm sits on land once owned by Thomas and Richard Penn, a 43,500 acre track that they called the “Manor of the Mask.” Although the Pennsylvania Legislature passed the “Divesting Act” in 1779, confiscating the proprietors’ unsold lands, it permitted them to retain their manors. William Conover was the first recorded owner of the tract of land (after the Penns) where you are located. Conover sold it on April 3, 1843, to Henry B. Cromer.
