The three miles of dirt roads to the retreat are passable year-round and give the feeling that you are "out there". A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended in the snow and in the springtime mud. Although television is non-existent and cell service is sketchy, there is WiFi at the Main House, as well as a land line. If you'd like some off-site adventure, Taos is 40 minutes away, and Santa Fe is about an hour and a half. The Ski Valley is one-hour door to door, and Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs are very close. Please be mindful of the desert quietude. Noise travels surprisingly far in this forest. If you need to board a dog, I can recommend 2 great kennels just 2 miles down the road.

Vista Verde exceeded all our expectations. You need to see this place in person to truly appreciate the space. I highly recommend staying here especially if you have a large group. I can't wait to come back!

I cannot describe the experience my family and I had the Elizabeth's retreat in mere phrases. It was a perfect and comfortable place. Elizabeth left detailed instruction for everything and her caretakers Issa and Anna were helpful at late at night when the electric fuse tripped. Anna went beyond and baked us cookies as well. The kitchen is fully equipped and one doesn't need to bring anything. Elizabeth even had the basic essentials in the pantry such as spices and whatnot. My favorite building was the Q. Nonetheless, all the buildings are unique and beautiful. Not only we had a great time experiencing nature, but we had an awesome time experiencing the unique architectural space. Thank you Elizabeth for enabling a beautiful experience for my family.

This place was a treasure- nestled in the secluded Carson National Forest. This entire area of Northern NM is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich places in North America. The stay there was everything we needed. Elizabeth was an exceptional host, welcoming and helpful. The kitchen and fireplace were perfect. Thanks for hosting us, and for all of you searching for a place to stay, this is an excellent choice!

Our stay at Elizabeth's retreat was AMAZING. The house and the grounds were perfect and cozy and we could not have found a better place to escape to. Elizabeth went out of her way to help direct us to many local adventures / attractions which helped make our week there even more enjoyable. We all left wanting to come back in the summer!

If you are looking for a retreat, where a bunch of people gather together to “rough it”, unplug (as the wifi that is supplied is spotty at best), and stay at the house for the entire time they are renting it this is an option. I would not recommend this rental for a family looking to sight-see or be close to anything. It is out in the middle of nowhere, not close to anything. Taos is 25 miles away, when we rented it we were told it was near Abiquiu and it turned out Abiquiu was 45 minutes away. The road to get to the house is a very bumpy dirt road and in winter, when we rented, it is muddy with HUGE puddles. If we didn't have an AWD it would have been impossible to get there. The directions were vague and when we called for clarification, I was told by Elizabeth, "the directions are clear if you pay attention." Not helpful (and a bit condesending) to say the least. The house is nice, clean and Elizabeth had the place warm for us when we arrived. There are signs all over the house that say to conserve water and take short showers which I found to be less than welcoming. There is a great kitchen for cooking that is fully stocked with cookware, make sure to do all your shopping before you get there or it will be at least an hour drive there and back. The water from the tap is a rain catchment system so you are not advised to drink it. There is well water available for consumption. We also had to make up our own beds and then upon leaving we had to strip them ourselves and FOLD them, which seems odd as they are just going to be washed. For a $100 cleaning fee I would expect that the sheets could be left on the beds. All in all, this functioned for us but was disappointing on various levels, mostly because the details of the rental are not clear on the mobile site and the owner instead of just talking to us about it at the time we met, waited till we were gone and started demanding money. I was there with my family on Thanksgiving vacation not a retreat and this just wasn’t the right fit for us.

Respuesta de Elizabeth:
It's very clearly stated that this is a rural retreat, that Taos is 40 minutes away, and that a 4- wheel drive is necessary in the snow and mud. I even contacted Monica regarding her vehicle before she arrived due to the early snow we received. Also, Monica is originally from Albuquerque, and so she knew very well how far Abiquiu is. I know she enjoyed going to Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs, which is 25 minutes away. I guess she failed to mention some of the other positive aspects because she didn't like the fact that I kept some of her security deposit for the DOG! she brought without my permission, or because I wanted to charge her for the additional guests she was planning to bring in the following day. Renting to this person was definitely not worth the aggravation! And I had even given her a discount!

We were eight adults and two babies and easily fit into this charming setting. The kitchen was bright, modern, and well equipped and the dining area was a fun place to share meals. The central living/fireplace area is a great place to share stories, adventures, and play games. The Rio Grande is only 30 minutes away, Taos is 40, and Taos-Ski Valley is within an hour so getting out and about was not onerous. There is also a resort spa close by that the girls spent a great day at. During our drives around the community we were constantly gazing at the mountains, valleys, and plains that surrounded us.The peace, solitude, scenery, and night skies we experienced at the retreat itself were also amazing. The retreat is a house and not a hotel. There were two wood stoves and a high efficiency fire place that needed occasional tending to keep it warm and cozy but that was easy and there was plenty of dry wood provided. My partner and I stayed in a Straw Bale Casita near to the main house and found it very charming. There was no bathroom attached but there was an outhouse close by and a full bathroom only two minutes away. Our group did just fine without a TV ... yeah. There are games and books on the shelves and lots of great hiking just outside the door. The upstairs bedrooms are simple but spacious, bright, and airy. Our host was easy to talk to, helpful, and not very far away should we have needed assistance. All in all we felt that the price charged was fair and the rental a good value. We enjoyed our winter stay and thought more than a few times that summer here must be amazing.

They have the place to themselves, but we have a wonderful caretaker who welcomes you with a brief orientation. He lives across the road, so he's available if the need arises.

Acerca de Elizabeth

I love the U.S. and I love to travel. Northern New Mexico is one of my favorite places- it's so eclectic, romantic, and spiritual, and it's full of art and artists! I'm an artist and designer myself, and on the side I teach yoga, (Sivananda style), and I do intuitive readings. Raised in the country in northeastern Pennsylvania, I then spent 23 years in NYC and San Francisco. Now it's wonderful to return to my rural roots, (but in a sunnier climate!), here in Carson. If you love trees, and you love the Southwest, this place is for you!
