The Monarch Park, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Southeastern Ohio, is a new social justice retreat center, private park, and nationally certified way station for the Monarch butterfly.  It is our mission to promote the health and wellness of our community by investing in both social and environmental justice.

Restore the land, restore the soul.

El alojamiento
We are intentional in creating a safe and inclusive space especially for people of color, women, and/or people who identify as LGBTQ.  We are also designing our playspace, trails, campsites, and gardens to be as accessible as we can.  The end result will be a rustic retreat for folks who want to learn more about sustainable social and environmental justice while having fun and meeting new friends in a comfortable and affirming atmosphere!

The Chrysalis is a hillside campsite secluded in a densely wooded area of the Park.  Resting on a large, wooden deck is a luxury, 15' diameter canvas bell tent, and awaiting you inside is a traditional full-sized bed on a frame with brass headboard and footboard.  There is a garment rack and storage for your wears (you can leave your worries and your shoes at the door), and you're invited to relax in one of our complimentary robes while drinking a complimentary beverage in your private, outdoor living room complete with a gas fireplace!

For your personal care needs, let a private, outdoor, hot-water shower and adjacent hand washing sink refresh you and wash away the day.  They are both located on the same deck as your tent.  And when nature calls, a short walk down the trail will provide you with a shared, safe, and clean composting outhouse in which to conduct your business.

Included in your stay is complimentary campfire breakfast (upon request and available 8am - 10am) and complimentary access to a 15' aluminium canoe, two (2) paddles, two (2) adult life vests, and one (1) required floatation device.  The canoe is moored at Lake Snowden, which is about four (4) miles away.  Just ask for the key at the time of booking.

Acceso para huéspedes
We welcome you to explore all that our grounds have to offer!  You will have access to a parking space, hiking trails, your private campsite & outdoor living room  (with hot-water shower and sink), a shared composting outhouse, and more!

Otros aspectos destacables
The Monarch Park is in a rural, country setting with limited cellular reception.  We have a complimentary WiFi station in the upper field.  The Chrysalis Campsite is located about 300' from your parking space and is accessed by a rugged hiking trail that runs from our upper field to our lower woodlands.  It is not ADA accessible, yet, but we're working on that!  In addition, to make your stay more comfortable, please consider bringing appropriate footwear for the outdoors and mosquito spray!

Thirty-something dad, professional speaker and academic, science buff, cook, poet, traveler... I've lived in rural Ohio most of my life, but have been around the world several times. Hong Kong, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Curacao, Malaysia, Singapore... I seek hidden gems in both places and people. At the top of my bucket list? To visit 50 UNESCO World Heritage sites (all continents). I have about 12 down so far. Over the years, I've booked rooms in every type of accommodation imaginable, from budget youth hostels to five-star luxury resorts. I've slept in tents, yurts, bunk beds, and cots; I've slumbered in presidential suites with private plunge pools. I've also stayed at a handful of Airbnbs, both in the States and abroad. Once, we even stayed in a little sailboat moored at a marina in Seattle (thanks, Dartanyon)! What I've learned, is that kindness is universal and that you should treat it as your currency. It is your renewable resource that never expires. It can take you far and open doors you didn't know were there. I've just listed my own apartment on Airbnb because I have a great space in an awesome neighborhood just beyond downtown Columbus. Visitors to the area (and locals) would want to stay here because it's clean, cozy, and conveniently located near CMH airport and luxury shopping/dining. Now, I can take what I've experienced as a traveler and apply those lessons to give my guests a warm and relaxing getaway.
