We had a broken pipe and gushing water and tried to stop it by wrapping the pipe with plenty of towels, but water kept coming. We informed Airbnb to let them know. We did not turn the water off on purpose! It was only after Airbnb told them about it, and telling us that we have to take care of our house, we shut off the water. It was not just inconvenience for the Mackaufs, but for everyone! (Website hidden by Airbnb) If the air conditioner was not working, we only heard about it through a rude text. We did check the air later and found no problem with it. Again, as I said in their review, they had no issues with playing victims to get their ways. The same also goes with the Wi-Fi. We only heard about it via this review! Our Wi-Fi was never shut down because our own business depends on it 24 hours!!
During their stay, Mackaufs created unpleasant and anxiety provoking energy around everyone on our property. So we requested modification of their stay from 2 months to 28 days. Money was never a priority for us regarding this guest. In spite of their inconsideration, we still gave them over 48 hours-notice to pack their few boxes. Yet, at the check-out they refused to leave (defying their own acceptance earlier) and started to do laundry at the check-out time! They stated that they will only leave when it is convenient for them. Between their bullying, intimidation, accusations, defiant, cursing, and complete lack of respect we could not trust them, nor wanting to tolerate their aggressive manners and being anxious in our own home, with the hope that they will leave sometimes soon. We had no choice, but to call the police in order to remove them.
We are proud of our place and all its rules as we have thought about them long and hard. The Mackaufs did all that was convenient only for them, by calling it “overruling”! (Please make sure the gate is closed behind you, please bring only one designated car inside as we have only one space, no overnight visitors, for examples) They would do the opposite, hoping we don’t say anything, and when we would remind them of it (with respectful and friendly ways), they would either blame others, argue, or continue to do it anyway, saying that we told them something different!!
In total we only faced them 3-4 times, yet we got plenty of texts (which they call e-mail), which gradually became more and more rude and disrespectful. We spent over 30 minutes on the phone with Edward prior to his arrival. But Jill still had to spend more than 20 minutes (not 20 minutes) at his arrival, mostly answering the same questions (which we answered over the phone earlier), as if he never heard them before. It was inconvenient, but we patiently took time to answer them and went over our rules. The second time Jill met them in response to a rude note Edward left at our door (regarding a friendly reminder note. It was about the gate which they kept leaving open). They sat outside in the patio, in the 110 degree heat, expecting Jill to talk with them outside and “refused” to let her in the apartment. THAT was a serious red flag. Edward accused Jill of snooping, “she wants to know what we’re hiding!” It was simply shocking as Jill had in her hand a slice of watermelon to welcome Xenia because she just joined Edward. And that was ONE of the meetings! Xenia eventually told Edward that his assumption was wrong and did ask Jill to come inside. Jill, again, tried to explain the importance of our rules and answered more of their questions.
Based on our above experience, we do not think they belong to the Airbnb community and do not recommend them.
