A renovated 3 bdrm house with Japanese garden. Each room features a different international artist – see photos. Main living space (Rob Unett) incorporates dining and living areas with an open fully equipped kitchen: 50 inch TV with cable for BBC and CNN; large curated collection of antique Japanese pottery and lacquer-ware; WiFi. Main bdrm (Claude Christo) and 2nd bdrm (Tadanori Yokoo) queen beds. Upstairs bdrm (Fane Flaws) 2 single beds. Modern bathroom and toilet. Walk everywhere in village.

El alojamiento
A luxury mountain village bolt-hole from the city. Fully equipped kitchen for Japanese and western cuisines. Nespresso, Alessi cutlery and Hakusan dining-ware with Japanese antique yakimono dishes as well. Cassina dining table and couch. Harmon Kardon blue-tooth speaker for your music. Gallery level art on the walls and Japanese crafts throughout house.
The house is well suited to discerning art loving guests wanting a non-Tokyo Japan experience. Akizuki and its environs are that. The house has part of my curated collection of antique and vintage Japanese pottery of many regional kiln styles, displayed along with antique lacquer-ware. A small library will help you understand more about Japanese design, architecture, arts and crafts. There are also catalogue books from Tate Modern and other museum exhibitions

Asakura, Fukuoka, Japón

The house has a small stream running alongside. The main bedrooms have floor to ceiling window-doors opening onto the Japanese garden. Once here you can easily walk to everywhere in the village. Interestingly, Akizuki has no reticulated water supply (there is a black-water drainage system though) as it sits on one of Japans top mineral water aquifers. The house has its own mineral water bore. Enjoy water from the tap and have a mineral water shower.

I am New Zealander who has lived in Japan for over 30 years. Japan, its cuisine, and people were so wonderful that one day, maybe after 10 years, I realized I was actually living here, and had no real wish to leave. Before the COVID-19 pandemic I traveled abroad often for business and pleasure. I chased locally crafted food and wine, opera, and good company in many countries. However, now I spend my hours (and money - I sold my business of Edanz Group to M3) bringing the beautiful historic mountain castle town of Akizuki back to life by building accommodation (7 Japanese houses; 4 renovated, 3 to go) and creating destination infrastructure. A brewery/restaurant/bakery project in an old riverside tofu factory is nearing construction. A satellite/shared office project in a large old farm house, also on the riverside, is at the planning stage. I try to bring into these projects my outsider’s view of Japan to what I love about the inside of Japanese style and sense. In doing this I hope to revive the local economy, bring new families and life back to Akizuki where the average age of its residents is around 70 years. I also hope to be able to show to visitors, inbound and domestic, the joy of life in this very special, beautiful rural environment. A place just 45 minutes from a major international airport but a million miles away. I also built a website ( (Website hidden by Airbnb) dedicated to Akizuki - it also shows what visitors to my accommodation can do when here Every morning I wake up early, exercise and then walk (soon with two smooth-coat Border Collies) up the river and into the slopes of Mt. Koshosan (where the “Hidden Fortress” at the root of the Star Wars fantasy can be found). I often have to pinch myself that it is all real.

The whole house is yours. Parking for two vehicles.
I, or my assistant Yuko, can usually meet guests on arrival (and on check-out) to give an introduction to the house and Akizuki - in English. A self check-in and departure system is also available.
