The Sheriff's House was constructed in 1904 in a dramatic renovation of the old 1850's Lawrence County Jail, using massive blocks of local Dark Hollow limestone.Weather permitting, you can enjoy your delicious breakfast out on the porch.

We think you'll like the art and artifacts from our travels in this room in the former Lawrence County Jail and Sheriff's Residence in Bedford, 40 miles south of Bloomington and an hour from French Lick. There's a queen-sized bed and private bath.

El lugar

Please note that we are located in Bedford, about forty minutes south of Bloomington and an hour northeast of French Lick. The former Lawrence County Jail and Sheriff's Residence is a very unusual historic landmark--in addition to the Victorian residence you see from the front, in back is a big old jail. The place oozes with local history and a somewhat spooky presence after dark.

Disponible para huéspedes

Your second floor room, the first floor common areas (living and dining rooms and the porch), and the yard and rear parking lot will all be accessible. Please ask if you would like to use the kitchen. The top floor of the house is our private family space, but we will show you the view from the tower if you would like to see it.

Atención a los huéspedes

I am always interested in talking to visitors, so I will interact as much or as little as you want, and time permits. I would also be glad to take you through the old jail if you're interested in seeing it.

Otros aspectos destacables

A big B&B breakfast is included with your room rate.

Rowena and her home are so warm and welcoming. The guest room had everything I needed from an extra blanket for a surprisingly cool summer night to refrigerator to stash snacks. But the breakfasts were the best treat of all-- fresh fruit, warm eggs, homemade muffins, and coffee.

I will simply say that if you don't choose one of the rooms in Rowena's former county jail and sheriff's residence that looks like a castle, you are missing out! Let me start with the room. It was homey, the bed was comfy, and I wanted to steal the pillows. We felt so at home in our room that we scrapped plans to do touristy things on a very hot day to stay in and take a nap! The food was homemade, fresh, and plentiful. Rowena even accommodating my crazy husband's dislike of pineapple and made his fresh fruit salad pineapple-free. We had homemade blueberry muffins that were only topped by the warm peach and cranberry muffins! Make sure you make time to take a tour of the jail and whole building. The stories were fantastic, and it was overwhelming to see the actual jail facilities and think about the people who were incarcerated. I'm definitely hitting (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) to find out more. Truthfully, I hated to say good-bye. I felt that Rowena was a kindred spirit, and I wanted to hear more and more about her life, her adventures, and the stories of the jail and what they've done to make it their home and the plans for the future. I surely hope we get to go back! Finally, I can only add that if will definitely be your loss if you don't choose staying with Rowena and spending a night in "jail." ;)

I am a retired Foreign Service Officer. During my career I served in Germany, three countries in Africa, Georgia (the former Soviet republic, not the state), and Washington, D.C. I live with my husband Reza and our cat, Mr. Fuzz, in the former Lawrence County Jail and Sheriff's House, a really cool 1904 limestone landmark one block from the courthouse square in the quiet town of Bedford, Indiana. My husband and I work constantly to maintain, restore and renovate this crazy old castle, but it is still more quirky than elegant, full of reminders of the travels, tastes and talents of ourselves, our family and our friends.

I volunteer a lot of time to local organizations, particularly the Lawrence County Museum, which I will encourage you to visit while you're here, and the Bedford Rotary Club.
