Villa Good Karma is located in the beautiful natural surrounds part of Ubud with the rice padis just nearby. The villa is 10 only minutes from the centre of town, Bintang Supermarket.
The host, Shane, was perfunctory (to be fair, he appeared to know little English) and didn't even show us around the apartment. He did carry my very heavy bag, and it's good he did; as a previous guest mentioned, the walk from the street, beginning with a set of very steep, poorly lit steps, is a good 5-minute labyrinth, parts of it treacherous at night. The next day the gracious owner stopped by to chat. I told him how much we had enjoyed our first night/day at Villa Karma and asked if he could provide a flashlight/torch, which he promptly delivered before night fall. The entry and inside of Villa Karma are lovely, esp. the covered lounge bed next to the pool. A bargain for the price, but recommended only for the spry.
My partner and I stayed here for a month and had kind of a mixed experience. The good: the house is small and new-ish, a nice size for 2 people. We loved the pool/outdoor seating area. Sara (owner) and Kadek (housekeeper) were very thorough at keeping the house clean every day, replacing the water, tending to the pool. Both were extremely friendly. There was a mosquito problem inside when we arrived but Sara was quick to put screens over the open windows. The area is very quiet for Bali. The not so good: First, we had a big problem with the internet. The host told us there was a "normal for Bali" connection and we needed reasonably stable internet (though we knew Bali internet is rarely fast) because we were working at home. The flash modem provided didn't work for us at all and we didn't have internet for the first 3 weeks. There is a better connection now; hopefully future guests will be able to rely on that. We were also very frustrated with the communication with the host. We never met him despite the fact that he apparently lives a few houses away. He was quick to respond to messages but generally terse and kind of cagey. When I asked for clarification about the house location (described in the listing only as "Bintang supermarket") he only said it was a "2 minute eco-friendly walk" from Bintang. This 2 minute walk was more like a 5-7 min walk in good weather, difficult with heavy luggage or groceries. Scooter parking is along the main road, which is sort of annoying. At night and in the rain it became a treacherous, mostly un-lit walk through alleyways and along a narrow ravine. The path flooded in the rain. Though the neighborhood was very pretty and many aspects of the house are nice, we were resentful that the host didn't provide more information from the beginning. If we had more complete information, we could have made a decision about whether this house would suit us or not. Overall, I'm not sure I would stay here again given the abundant villa options in Ubud.
The villa was great, very private, cosy, beautiful pool always at the perfect temperature with a splendid rice field view thrown in. Quiet neighborhood for uninterrupted sleep ins and lazy afternoons. Bathroom was spotless and the cleaning by Kadek was a plus. We had a perfect stay.
