Lovely and affordable spot super close on Onjuku beach. Del and Kelly were lovely and available to help throughout my stay. They recommend places to visit, eat and surf and always had a smile on their face. The loft was simple but very clean and quiet. I wouldn't hesitate to come back again one day.

We had such a great time at Flying Sumo! Del, Kelly, and their staff were all friendly and always reachable for any questions. With a little map along with their restaurant recommendation, all meals (lunch/dinner) we had were so so good. Renting surf boards was easy too. Beach is just a min walk. At the end of our stay, my dad became sick and they comforted him pretty well. Thanks to their care and hospitality, my dad made it through back home safely. Anyone who is looking for a place in Onjuku, this is the place to stay!

The room was great! Walking distance to the beach and good restaurants. Del and Kelly are awesome! They took us around to check and surf a few spots and we up getting really fun waves. I would defiantly recommend this for any traveling surfers or non surfers as Del and Kelly are great company and will provide you with everything you need. Thanks again for the awesome accommodations!

Del and Kelly were awesome during my stay, super nice, gave me many recommendations on places to eat and visit, and hooked me up with surf board rentals. The place was exactly as described in the listing and I really enjoyed my time there. The surfing was fun and I would recommend it for anyone who is in Tokyo and looking for a short trip out of town to refill the stoke. Onjuku is a cool place, seems to be a cross between an older Japanese village and a Mexican surf town. It was pretty empty when I was there in June during the week but I've heard it gets pretty full in the summer on the weekends.

Abridged-review: Stay with Del and Kelly! Long-form review: Flying Sumo is a blue and caramel gem in the otherwise fading, but surprisingly effecting, concrete and plaster of Onjuku. My room was large (200 square feet+?), clean, and featured a rad loft area in addition to a pvt. bathroom. I was 200 meters from my room to the beach and Del supplied an unlimited amount of surf movies free of charge. In the ‘service for payment’ universe I was beyond satisfied and I think the accommodation Flying Sumo offers is an absolute steal for this area of Japan. You would have to be super keen or perhaps, super charming to find an equivalent accommodation at a better price. Beyond the confines of the service for payment universe Del and Kelly consistently went out of their way on my behalf. Arriving alone in Japan and not speaking the language was overwhelming. Del showed me where to eat and how to save money, gave me several tours of Onjuku, helped me get started on the language, and shared endless facts, advice, and stories: from restaurant etiquette to Onjuku history to the bureaucratic dynamics of the Japan Pro Surfing Association to his pioneering of pre-ozzie Niseko. Del and Kelly made sure I found the best surf on offer in the Katsura area each day there were waves. When Onjuku beach wasn’t working Del would drop me off and pick me up at nearby spots. When Onkuku was working Del would tell me the tide and best sandbar—advice and favors that you normally would have to hire a guide to get. Del and Kelly also provided invaluable assistance in my research project: Kelly acted as translator in a very important meeting I had during my stay, traveling several hours with me by train and doing an incredible job translating through a nearly 3 hour economics and aquaculture discussion. The last email I received from them was the translations for a list of Japanese phrases that I was struggling with! Del and Kelly are truly warm and kind people, I was downright sad to leave.

Del and Kelly were awesome hosts. We arrived a rainy Thursday, but they made it feel like it was the best thing ever. They lent us some DVDs, and the party I traveled with had a really nice supermarket-sushi movie night in our room (Yes, supermarket-sushi, since most restaurants are closed on Thursdays it seems :)), which was much needed after 6 days of binge drinking in Tokyo. The room was clean and just perfect. 4 people fit easy, more than that can fit, but might get a little bit crowded. You sleep on typical Japanese futons, which to me personally is a little uncomfortable, but I'm getting old, you know? :) The apartment is like 1 minute walk from the beach, if you walk at a fast pace, so perfect spot for a surf rental place, so you don't have to drag the board for 100 miles. The sleepy town of Onjuku was amazing. Nice people, and really quiet on weekdays it seems, with good food, and good surf, and bustling with people on the beach during weekends. I hope to come back, I liked it way more than Kamakura, even if it was raining 2 out of 3 days we where there :)

Living the life at the beach in Onjuku, Chiba, Japan. Up early mornings for a quick surf before work - work is running a surf shop, cafe & bar and a lodge 100 meters off the beach. Each end of the beach has a fishing port and fishing boats are bringing in fresh fish everyday. Living at the beach is stress free, but when I want to get into town, Tokyo is just an 80 minute train ride away. Other cities are even closer thanks to Japan's fast and efficient train network.

Surfing guests, non-surfing guests, all are welcome and fun to interact with. Come join the fun!
