The Story of 4 individual, diverse and dynamic local, ethnic Vietnamese cultures coming together to uplift and inspire the local community as a family. Shu Tan Shu was a simple village girl who lived with her parents in the mountains and depended on the rice terraced fields for subsistence. Her parents could not afford to send her to school, and she dropped out at 3rd grade. As a little girl Shu followed her mother to sell handicrafts to tourists on the streets She seized the opportunity to learn English from tourists and slowly became a trekking guide. At 19, she became a single mother. That did not stop her from building the first ethnic minority-owned homestay in her village for her widowed cousin in 2009. In 2010, Shu started the Sapa O’Chau cooperative. This is the first boarding facility where youth could board and study at the government high school located in Lao Cai. Youth also learn English from international volunteers and get their tour guide license after a course with an NGO. In 2013, Shu established Sapa O’Chau Travel, the first ethnic minority-owned tour operator with a international tour operator license. Lonely Planet featured it. In 2016, Sapa O’Chau Travel won silver for World Responsible Tourism Awards – Poverty Reduction and Inclusion and a finalist for World Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. Shu was also personally named one of the Forbes Vietnam 30 under 30. In 2017, Sapa O’Chau Travel Social Enterprise was formally renamed to reflect its social enterprise status. Shu was one of the model citizens commended by the Central Government. Sapa O’Chau won Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Blue Swallow awards – Top 5 best social enterprises in Vietnam. Sapa O’Chau Travel Social Enterprise clinched the 2017 Best Community Initiative for World Responsible Tourism Awards. Shu was shortlisted for 2019 Women of the Future Awards Southeast Asia social entrepreneur. Xa In January 2015 Xa’s 13 year old daughter was abducted and sold to a neighboring country. Xa was devastated but determined to get her daughter back. Unable to read or write led to much anger and frustration while trying to communicate with the authorities. Over the next 18 months while searching for her daughter Xa learned to read and write in Vietnamese. Finally after much heartache but needing to be strong Xa’s daughter was returned to her. Over this time Xa realized that many people in her local community were very poor and uneducated , she dreamed of empowering and uplifting her community. Xa owned the land that Sapa Eco Mountain Lodge stands on today but did not have the skills or vision on how to start a business. Xa met Shu Tan and together they decided to build Sapa Mountain Eco Lodge using as much natural local material as possible. Slowly over time their dream is to empower the community by leading by example and showing just what can be achieved when people irrespective of culture or creed work together, not only for themselves but for the entire community. DZung & Phuong DZung and Phuong came to Ta Phin about 4 years ago searching for a place in nature where they could settle. They have both been actively involved in the management and development of Sapa Mountain Eco Lodge from the beginning offering a wealth of knowledge, expertise and experience. DZung is our very capable and charming General Manager at Sapa Mountain Eco Lodge. Phuong’s expertise lies in the kitchen where she loves to create and dream up new ideas for LiLi’s Restaurant. Our very own resident Chef.
