Our Hillsboro, Old Adobe Guest House is an authentic, cozy, restored home from the 1880's with a floor plan reflects its historic nature. The house sleeps five comfortably. Our place is perfect for a couple, family with children or close friends. There is a working kitchen, a living room area with a wood stove and a yard that is 'desert' lush with indigenous cactus and fruit trees, surrounded by a privacy wall. There are sitting areas just outside where guests can enjoy the out of doors.

El alojamiento
What follows is a description of our Our Old Adobe Guest House ~ and please be aware that because we live in a remote area, sometimes it will take several hours to see a booking request and to respond. Barbara and David ~ check email (and text messages when available) a couple of times a day. We will respond to reservation requests as soon as possible and be forewarned that because we are not always near a connection to the internet it may take some time to get back to you ~ and ~ we truly appreciate your interest in our place. That being said, The Old Adobe Guest House is located just off the main street in Hillsboro ~ and is less than 100 yards from where 'all the action' is in Hillsboro. Our place affords visitors an opportunity to experience old New Mexico. Hillsboro was once a thriving mining town that is now consider a "ghost" town ~ even though the town has about 100 year round residents. Hillsboro is in the foothills of the historic Black Range mountains. Today the area is home to ranchers, miners, artists and musicians and assorted independently minded individuals. Our Old Adobe was built in the 1880’s. We take pride in having lovingly restored the house and added modern amenities (indoor plumbing, satellite dish, a stove and refrigerator). The two foot thick adobe walls keeps these kind of houses warm in the winter and cool in the summer and therefore we do not have air-conditioning. In the winter, the house is heated by a wood stove and some gas heaters. The house includes two formal bedroom areas (to get to the main bedroom you can enter from the outside, or through the second bedroom). There is spacious living room area, an open kitchen with a dining table, and a well appointed and updated bathroom. The house is located right across from the ruins of the old courthouse (Hillsboro way back when, used to be the county seat) and the old jail. The yard is 'desert' lush with indigenous cactus and fruit trees, surrounded by a wall for privacy. There is cozy sitting in the back courtyard with a grill for cooking and enjoying the night sky. There are several areas where guests can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Please note: Hillsboro is a remote area and cell phone reception is spotty and does not work from our house ~ although people can connect through wifi to make phone calls. Some people go up to the old cemetery, which is a two minute drive, to establish a cell tower connection.

If you look in the photos we provided you can see a picture of Hillsboro as it was back in the late 1800's and what it looks like today. The town has changed little since the early 1900's. For us, 'rush hour' involves six cars passing through town.

Today Hillsboro is home to a rich and diverse community of interesting people. While we respect our guest's privacy, guests are also welcome to sit in on and observe local activities like the Friday night 'guitar picking circles' and to visit our local wine bar and restaurant. The closest grocery story is in Truth Or Consequences (TORC) which is 35 miles away. We recommend that you bring your preferred groceries with you. Fill up on gas before you arrive as the nearest gas station is 18 miles away.

Here is the long and the short of it ~ it you are looking for a safe, interesting, quiet, authentic rural experience of the Southwest ~ our place is perfect for you.

If you want to discover what life is like in the old west, if you appreciate nature, if you are looking for a place where you can unwind and enjoy fresh air, and a place that can serve as a home base while you explore the surrounding area ~ then our place would be ideal for you!

Typical local activities include: a local tennis court, a small museum, and great hiking. Be aware that we are in the high desert and guests should read up on how to protect themselves from run ins with snakes during the summer when they are out.
We have taken measures to make the yard inside our privacy wall as snake proof as possible.

Acceso para huéspedes
Guests occupy the entire house - however not the studio or small 'cassita' in the back of the property.

Hillsboro has a cozy little cafe, "The Cafe" which welcomes guests with open arms ~ from Friday to Tuesday from 8AM to 3 PM. There is a US Post Office and a wine bar which is open Thursday thu Sunday in afternoons and early evenings, and there is a small art gallery and an antique shop. There is a community center (with local music a couple of times a month) and tennis court and library which guests are welcome to use.

Hillsboro is just six miles from an entrance to the Gila National Forest and nine miles from the old mountain mining ghost town of Kingston, NM.

There is great bird watching along Percha Creek which runs through the center of town. It is called "Percha" Creek because our beloved seasonal vultures perch in cottonwood trees along the creek.

TorC, which is 30 miles away off Interstate 25 has many renowned Hot Springs and Mineral Baths.

Barbara was an English teacher in Truth Or Consequences for many years and is now mostly retired. She is a recipient of a Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence ~ and is active in the Hillsboro community. She was originally from New York and traveled all around the world - she has an undergraduate degree from Cooper Union and has a masters degree from the Art Institute of Chicago and a Doctorate in English. Barbara's Co-host, David, is painter and sculptor, and musician ~ well know (locally and nationally) for his plainer paintings. He is also a world traveler, a jack of all trades, 'cowboy' (he trains horses) and is knowledgable about the local historian. Both David and Barbara are active in their community, concerned about protecting the environment, respecting local culture and diversity, and have an abiding love and appreciation for their adopted home (Hillsboro), New Mexico, and the Old Southwest.
