All that glitters is not gold..
We had experienced this well-known saying during our last Airbnb stay at Elisabeth's apartment in Berlin. "A rare find" it said, but unfortunately we got a bit disappointed because of some cleanliness issues. Mostly the unwashed and smelling bedlinen were disturbing. Unfortunately there's not yet a picture upload function on Airbnb. During our stay Elisabeth told us via mail that it was washed, but „the washing mashine of her parents was a little bit broken“… All surfaces (dining and couch table, nightstand, makeup table) were sticky and dirty, fruit and stuff got mold in the kitchen, there were big spiderwebs in the corners and there were only dirty sponges to wash the dishes. We passed on coffee as coffee powder from last time’s use was molding away in the espresso maker. We also had to go without internet. Elisabeth contacted us for the first time (after contacting her three times) and told us about the absence of it the evening before we arrived.
We didn’t have the chance to meet Elisabeth. She left the keys at the coffeehouse next door. Altogether the communication was a bit slow since necessary information, like where to get the keys in order to enter the apartment were provided just the evening before our arrival. We also didn’t know where to leave the keys after our departure, as the coffeehouse next door was closed on that Tuesday at noon. As the apartment’s door locks by itself, we decided the best option was to leave the keys inside her postbox, which is already inside the building and to notify her about that.
To be fair there were not only negative things. The bathroom for example was clean. The apartment itself is nicely decorated, it’s located on the 3rd floor without elevator and a view into a beautiful and quiet inner yard. This area of Friedrichshain could probably be one of the most beautiful ones. All around you will find enough late-night supermarkets and eating options until late. The transport connection is great, there are bus, subway and underground stations nearby.
After our departure I kindly wrote a factual mail to Elisabeth to describe what we found positive and negative about our stay in her apartment. What I received as a response was a little childish and aggressive message about how „embarrassingly fastidious I am” and that she’s „now telling me how we are handling this issue“, that we „are going to forget about it and we are not going to evaluate each other“, otherwise she’s „going to write me a honest rating, that will surely tempt other hosts to never book me again.“
I don’t think the price is appropriate for the offered circumstances. For 84 € per night I think it’s possible to expect a tidy apartment with clean bedlinen. Because of this trouble I had to contact Airbnb, so now we’re in their mediation program to solve this issue.
