A new addition to the Johannesburg’s city center, this stunning apartment is above the bustling streets and 7 mins Uber from the entertainment centres of MABONENG, NEWTOWN and BRAAMFONTEIN. It's within easy reach of most of Joburg’s tourist offerings, has a JACUZZI, BBQ and GIANT CHESS SET on its PRIVATE ROOF TERRACE as well as access to the shared penthouse rooftop pool and solar heated hot water.
It is the perfect base for friends & family to explore Joburg's Urban Revival, Soweto & beyond.

El alojamiento
I'm glad you like the look of my place, to the extent that you are reading my listing. Please note that it is not suitable for gatherings or events - e.g. birthday parties, bachelorettes, etc.

And if it's not available for all the dates that you require, or you are looking to spend a little less, you can see the other apartments in the building (including other penthouses) here:
Many people also book a combination of this and one of my other apartments in the building, across the duration of their stay.

This is one of 4 apartments that I make available, in the same building, 3 of which are penthouses. Each has its own character and is a reflection of the different architects/designers that renovated them.

You can look through all 4 apartments at

This apartment is beautiful and stylish but the real value is the local knowledge and recommendations provided by the hosts. Joburg has so many beautiful places to explore and people to meet and, like any big city, places you don’t want to stumble into blindly. Stay safe while experiencing the best of Joburg by following our up to date recommendations of places to go (and to steer clear of) whilst you’re in town.

My aim is to help you ‘cultivate an experience’ of authentic Joburg by connecting you with some of the right drivers, tour guides, restaurants, experiences etc. to support your planning and make the most of your time in town, with my apartment as your home base.

This stunning apartment is spread over the 9th, 10th and 11th floor of the heritage (listed), former Barclays Bank HQ, building on the oldest street in Johannesburg.

Providing a different (some say more authentic) Johannesburg experience to the Northern suburbs, it is less than 10min Uber ride to Maboneng, Braamfontein, Newtown, Joziburg lane and 1Fox street, making it perfectly located to experience the city's urban revival and access the coolest parts of Jo'burg, whilst not having to put up with the noise that goes with actually staying in these 'lively' areas.

Many don't realise that Johannesburg is also a pan-African cultural centre. The location of this apartment gives much easier access to those aspects of our city, including the sights and sounds that come with being in a developing African city. If you are looking for the pristine Porsche/Rolex/Jimmy Choo experience of Johannesburg, you're likely to be happier in areas such as Sandton.

The apartment is less than 10 minutes walk to the closest Citysightseeing open-top hop-on-hop-off tour bus stop, about 25 minutes drive from Johannesburg airport and 10 minutes away from the Gautrain station, giving direct access to Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and the airport.

The layout of the apartment was designed so that the main living spaces would all benefited from easy access to the outdoor space and the amazing city views.

On the entrance floor of the apartment there is a Master bedroom which incorporates a en-suite bathroom (with a shower and WC) ; a second bedroom which has an extra length queen bed; a third bedroom with two extra length single beds; and another bathroom with a Japanese style sit up bath.

The middle floor of the apartment has an open plan living area (with a fabulous woodburning stove), dining area (with a 8-seater dining table) and gourmet kitchen with granite counters, bespoke handmade cabinetry and stainless appliances. All of which creates an amazing homely room to hang out in. This family centered room also has air conditioning. There is an additional chill out room with a hammock (where guests often set up the air mattress) and a WC.

All of the downstairs bedrooms have triple-glazed windows to keep the city sounds out and the warmth in, during the short South African winters. Each of the bedrooms also has a ceiling fan.

Exit the back door and an iron spiral staircase (shared with the apartment next door) leads up to the private roof deck (exclusively for this apartment) which serves as our garden. There is no lawn but it has a Jacuzzi, bbq/braai, a large dining table, a fire pit and giant chess set.

The apartment also has a solar powered hot water system

3 things guests like about my place...
It's 5 minutes away from the party capital of Maboneng, but far enough away to be quiet at night.
Chilling out on the amazing roof terrace.
The open plan main floor, with the amazing kitchen and roaring fireplace
3 things they don't like...
It's not in a posher suburb like Sandton.
The Jacuzzi takes a long time to heat up.
The spiral staircase that leads to the roof is quite narrow.

Dónde vas a estar

Johannesburgo, Gauteng, Sudáfrica

Think Brooklyn New York, Downtown LA, Brixton, Shorditch or Hackney in London, 30 years ago. Jo'burg has finally broken free from the chains of its troubled past. And, lead by 'Urban cool' centers such as the CBD, Maboneng and Braamfontein, is now listed amongst the best places to visit, in the Southern Hemisphere (do a web search on recent Johannesburg articles in publications such as Rough Guide, GQ Magazine and The Guardian for a non-biased opinion).

Many don't realise that Johannesburg is also a pan-African cultural centre. The location of this apartment gives much easier access to those aspects of our city, including the sights and sounds that come with being in a developing African city. If you’ve come all the way to Johannesburg looking for the pristine Porsche/Rolex/Jimmy Choo experience of Our city, you're likely to be happier in a different area such as Sandton.

The term CBD is often incorrectly used in reference to the whole of urban Johannesburg. The western side of central Johannesburg, where we are, is quite different to the eastern side, from where much of the news emanates. This is probably because we have the City Hall on the block behind us, the headquarters of two of South Africa’s largest Banks a few blocks to the north and south as well as the country’s largest mining company. So, whilst there is traffic during the day, this part of town is very quiet at night.

I love that my apartment is right in the middle of the regeneration of town. Trendy markets, galleries and underground clubs and bars mix it with the banks and mining house HQs. This is the oldest part of, what is actually a very young city.

With the old bank and mining house HQ's, it was the 'Square Mile' of Southern Africa. In the 1980's and 1990's lots of the businesses started to move out to new suburbs like Sandton and central Jo'burg fell into disrepair. Then in the early 2000's the CBD urban renewal started.

Busy during weekdays and very quiet in the evenings, the area is not as 'manicured' as newer parts of the city, but it's certainly on that trajectory and improving by the day. I'd recommend anybody book one of the many inner-city guided walking tours to get a full appreciation of the city center

The area, alongside Maboneng and Braamfontein are urban regeneration centers of Johannesburg, where youth and arts culture prevail. Anybody looking for a suburban experience of Johannesburg would probably be more comfortable in areas like Sandton and Bryanston.

Commissioner Street is the oldest street, in the oldest part of Johannesburg. It's within a 9 or 10 block area that was originally modeled on neoclassical city centers. It maintains its old New York/City of London look and feel. It's thriving during the week and very quiet at the weekends.

We do not have the glistening shopping malls or high electric fencing of the Northern suburbs. It's has maintained it's more traditional city center layout, with wide sidewalks, street cafes and is bathed in a real creative energy. Whilst the cafes and art galleries have always been around, the growth of the weekend farmers/flea markets, in the surrounding suburbs, over the past five years, makes it a great base for weekend excursions. Neighbourgoods market (Braamfontein), Arts on Main (Maboneng) and 1fox (Fox street) are all 5-10 minutes away.

The building itself overlooks some of Johannesburg's most historic and beautiful buildings.

Built in the 1940's by one of old Johannesburg's foremost architects, Gordon Leith, it is constructed of sandstone in the architectural style of the "Modern Movement Era", but includes many Art Deco features. It is a building preserved under the National Heritage Act, has a state of the art security system backed up by CCTV and a 24hr security guard presence.

We're up-cycling Johannesburg's city center, with luxury apartment renovations. Come and experience something amazing and truly unique, for a few days. Hi, I'm Ade. Born and raised in the UK, I moved to South Africa in 2005 and fell in love with the place! Renovating spaces is my hobby and your booking, via Airbnb, helps pay for me to continue with this hobby. I've had such a positive response from the 5,000+ guests that have stayed in these apartments, over the past 5 years, that I just kept going and am just about to start my fifth project. All of my renovations are made available under the banner African Penthouses. For my day job I work for global NGO that helps financial institutions to improve access to formal financial service for low income women. It means I travel. A lot! At least it did before Covid-19 hit :-( So Airbnb asked me to list 5 things I like. Well, in no particular order (and purposely not mentioning my amazing girlfriend).... Building and home renovation. Have loved creating unique spaces and learning from each project. The fact that these types of building's would be out of my reach, in any major city in Europe or America, makes it that bit more enjoyable. My job. After 20 years in corporate, it feels good to building something special. I have a real passion for music. More playing than making, though I am in the process of learning to play the piano, and was a fairly reasonable DJ in my younger days (does that count as making?). I'm slowly building up my Sonos system (Lego for adults), which is great for filling your home with sounds controlled from the iPad! I'm a Spurs fan. (Tottenham, not San Antonio). Yes there are one or two fans outside of Tottenham. London. The one advantage of having to travel so much for my work, was that I actually got back to London quite often :-)

Durante tu estancia

I live in one of the other penthouses but travel a lot for work, so unlikely to be in town during your stay, however my co-host, Dylne, also lives in the building and will be available to assist with keys handover etc.

I am always available via the Airbnb messaging system or phone.

As I have other apartments in the same building, if this apartment isn't available for the whole time you'd like it, please send me a note. I quite often have guest that will stay in this apartment for a few days and experience penthouse living, then move to one of the other apartments for the rest of their stay.

Guest will have exclusive access to the entire apartment plus wifi, satellite TV, the Jacuzzi and the roof deck. You will also have access to the communal (shared) roof top swimming pool.
