Access
Seiun-An- is within easy walking distance from the city center as well some of Kyoto’s major sightseeing spots in the Higashiyama district , (the Eastern Mountains), including of course, Gion, the famous Geisha district; Kiyomizu Temple area with Ninenzaka and Sanenzaka; Yasaka Shrine; Chion-in Temple; Heian Shrine and more.

Seiun-An- is also a few minutes away from the Kamo River (Kyoto’s main river which runs through the city) on one side, and Maruyama park, popular with the locals at the foot of the mountains, where you can do as the Kyoto-ites do – take an early morning jog, stroll along the riverside, or relax on a park bench and watch the world go by. Another option would be to take an early morning walk in the Gion district itself and get a glimpse of the Geisha world before the tourists fill the streets.

I recommend staying here if you want to get a taste of traditional Japanese living. What we liked best about the machiya is that it felt authentic. Plus, it was well maintained and clean. Bus stops and metro stations are very accessible from the place, but you don't need to go far to sight see! Historic Gion is just around the corner.

The Machiya is so beautiful. I would love to know more about the history of the place! We stayed only one night and the staff personally came to check on us when we had Wi-Fi complications. Only complaint was that there was no plug for the bathtub and as we only discovered this later in the evening the staff could not help us until morning when we were leaving! Would have been nice to enjoy that cool tub.

Kyo-Machiya's place is a very traditional Japanese house. Recommended for experiencing Japanese culture. Close to Gion area so we basically walked to restaurants and shops. Stairs to second floor is a little narrow and steep but other than this is all very good!

The host team is Amazing!! They will treat you like personal family guest!! Very nice place in Gion, as cozy as it gets!! One small caution remark, if you are a tall person, might be a bit tight for moving around. Loved the whole experience being in old Geisha house!!

We had a delightful stay here for two nights, check in was easy and the location was quiet and very easy to find given the directions provided. Beautiful warm house with great facilities. Would highly recommend staying here- we hope to stay again!

Very traditional accommodation: it is on two floors with narrow corridors and the stairs steep with a short banister which can make it difficult if you are elderly. It can be blisteringly cold in these wooden houses especially outside Summer: Japan relies on air conditioners to heat places. This is not good enough but the host kindly provided very effectively portable oil-filled radiators (not the smelly kerosene ones thank goodness). It is quiet and there is not much natural light or view as the house is surrounded by big buildings. You are a short walk from the subway ( that is well connected to Osaka and Nara) and to the Gion district and the shrines - so really good in this respect. Be prepared to live very ethnically.
