Solo campo y paz.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at Alex and Liz's place. It is in stunning location with beautiful views and a quiet local atmosphere. We loved waking up to the sounds of birds. Would absolutely recommend staying here for anyone wanting to get away from Cusco for a couple days.

I really don't like leaving negative reviews but there are a few things I would have liked to know prior to booking. I'll start with the positives. The owners themselves were friendly. They gave us lots of information on local trails, held our bags for us while we hiked to Machu Picchu and offered to help us arrange guides and taxis. The house is located in a small village and is a great place to do hiking. You'll need to take a bus to reach the larger towns, but the towns aren't very far away and the buses are very inexpensive and run frequently. We actually really enjoyed using the public transportation. The house has the things you need: bed, kitchen, bathroom, etc. but not up to the standards I had expected from the pictures. The doors aren't functional. They lock automatically and you need a key to open them which is a little inconvenient when you have multiple people and one set of keys. We had a lot of difficulty getting the bedroom doors to unlock. After coming back from a long day of hiking, spending 30 minutes trying to get into the room was not the way we wanted to end the night. We tried to rig the lock with duct tape but it didn't really help. We were assured the lock would be fixed the following day but it never happened. It didn't seem this was a top priority for them which was frustrating. This part might come with the territory but we also found several scorpions in the bedrooms and bathroom. As well as ants and spiders all over the walls of the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen table and fridge. I felt as if I was camping, which would be great if I was planning on camping but not for $76USD a night. Due to a workers holiday we were unable to get a bus or taxi back so we had to stay one night in a hostel in Ollantaytambo. That room cost us $25USD and though it didn't have a kitchen, it did have a private room and bathroom and was a bit nicer than the room we booked for $50 more. Had I been aware of these issues, I may have opted to just camp or stay in a cheap hostel and save myself some money.

Respuesta de Alex And Liz:
We are sorry to hear you weren't entirely content during your stay. However we feel your review isn't entirely fair or truthful. Firstly the doors in our house are functional! One of the locks (out of the 6 we have in the house) failed during your stay and as soon as you alerted us to the problem we immediately took measures to open the door for you. My wife and I live next door and we let you know that we were available if you had any problems.  You should have alerted us earlier! The reason the lock was not replaced immediately was because you lead me to believe that you had fixed the lock! The house was handed over freshly cleaned and free of spiders, ants and scorpions. If you found any in the house they found their way into the house during your stay. I find it hard to believe that you found "several" scorpions in the house considering that during the entire 3 years we have lived here we have encountered less than 5 and no other guest has ever found one to our knowledge! Its really not a fair comparison to compare what you paid for a single room elsewhere to this entire house with 3 bedrooms, a living room, fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, patio and garden that accomodates up to 6 people! Had we known you were not entirely happy we would have offered you a refund and we would like to offer you a 50% discount on any future stays as a gesture of goodwill.

Alex and Liz were fantastic hosts!! Planning a trip from a completely different country can be nerve wrecking, but they made everything great!!! They arranged our car service and excursions which took a complete burden off of our shoulders!! They were helpful before and during our stay and we were most appreciative of that. Their daughter was an excellent host herself :). If you're looking for a place quiet and so where to unplug from the world, this is definitely the place to do it!!!
