Gremlin’s Getaway, is a 144 year-old remote mountain home near national forests, local mountains and natural waterfalls as well as Asheville, NC, and Johnson City and Bristol, Tenn. So if hiking, bike riding, rafting, rock climbing, mineral mining, or just getting away from the city interests you, this is the place for you! Pets are welcome for a fee of $25 per pet, per stay paid in cash upon arrival. I encourage you to visit Gremlin's Getaway's Facebook page for more information.

El alojamiento
As a historical landmark here on Shootout Mountain, the cabin has seen its share of owners and passerbys, like the moonshiners and revenuers of days gone by. It is said that you can hear boots walking across the front porch deck at night, but when you go to look, there is nothing there. Ghosts from the past? Who knows. Maybe you can figure it out. After all, Gremlin's Getaway was the first house built on this remote mountain area.

Acceso para huéspedes
Although the cabin is in a remote area, there is a General Store approximately five miles down the road that offers travelers gas and a few grocery items. There is also a Dollar General seven miles further down the road that offers more grocery items and other essentials. There is Internet access at the cabin; so you will have full access of your cell phone. There is also two smart TVs that have Hulu and Netflix programming. You'll feel right at home in the cabin's full kitchen, bath, living room and two bedrooms as well as its small office. And, you don't have to go out to wash and dry your clothes while you're here because there is a washer and dryer in the bathroom. Coffee, tea, creamer and fresh eggs are provided (complements of my chickens) as well as cooking oil, spices and a few other condiments. Pots, pans, baking sheets, dishes, glasses and silverware are here for your use; so I encourage guests to bring whatever grocery items they may need for their meals. There is a charcoal grill available as well as a wood-burning fire pit. So just bring whatever it is you want to cook and enjoy grilling out in the open as you relax on the oversized chairs at the table on the back deck or enjoy roasting marshmallows over the firepit while enjoying nature on the two-person swing on the back lawn. Dogs are welcome and will enjoy the run of the 1/2 acre, fenced-in back yard. There's even a extra-large dog door installed in the bathroom for easy exit and entrance. Or they can just bask in the sun at the back or sit in the shade on the front of the gated porch.

Otros aspectos destacables
There are no signs that point to "Gremlin's Getaway," so be sure to use your GPS to get here. However, you may think you're turning up someone's driveway, but I assure you, you are going the right way. Once you reach the entrance to Melton Branch Road and begin your one-mile drive up the mountain road until you see an sign overhead that reads "Shootout Mountain." Continue up the wide, one-lane gravel road to the fork where there signposts with names on it. Mine is "SLAMIN." You will take the left-hand fork and continue up the mountain until you reach Gremlin's Getaway (1014 Melton Branch Road), which will be on your right. Go up the short concrete driveway and park on the concrete slab at the side of the cabin. Again, most everyone uses GPS to get around, but I encourage guests to put in the destination before leaving the cabin as the signal will be lost once you start down Melton Branch Road.

Shootout Mountain is home to several homeowners who live in their mountain home year-round as well as seasonal homeowners. The road to the cabin is a private partially paved roadway; so there is very little traffic. Guests will be delighted at the sight of the moon and stars shining overhead as they sit on the oversize chairs on the cabin's deck at night.

I am a 72-year-old, retired Navy veteran of 26 years, serving three years during the Vietnam conflict and returning for another 23 years at the height of Desert Shield/Storm all the way to the Global War on Terrorism, retiring in 2004. I am originally from Bangor, Maine, but chose to retire in Bakersville among the beauties of nature in this quiet mountain community. I brought with me my son's two livestock guardian dogs who keep me and my feathered friends (who provide me with fresh eggs every day) safe from woodland predators. Also with me are two juvenile male peacocks, Roy and Boy, who add a touch of elegance to the property. There are also three indoor-outdoor cats to keep mice, moles and boles at bay. As a military photojournalist, I spend a great deal of time writing and taking pictures of the plants, animals, and mountain vistas. I named the cabin, Gremlin's Getaway, in memory of my son, Roy Hicks II, AKA Gremlin Glass (artist) who lost his battle with cancer in 2013 just one day before his 45th birthday. He would have loved this property as it would have been an ideal location for him to continue his love of creating glass art. I'm certain that guests who come to stay at Gremlin's Getaway will be excited about their stay in this historic 142-year-old cabin and thrilled to be able to take advantage of all of the attractions this area of God's country has to offer. There is something here for everyone to enjoy, whether it be exploring, hiking, biking, rock climbing, rafting, quilting, mineral mining, or searching for antiques and historical landmarks, Bakersville and the surrounding towns will not disappoint. This is your chance to get away from the chaos of the city and get back to nature!
