La Grande Maison d'Arthenay B&B is set peacefully amidst the vines, in the French Parc Naturel a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore local wine growing region, relax in glorious gardens, picnic in the vines. 4 B&B rooms from €100 per room pn.

El lugar

Within the walls of the 17c fortified farm is the Manor House, an ancient bake house, the gate house and shepherd’s house, extensive wine caves and a partially hidden troglodyte chapel. An unusual and unique B&B, bed and breakfast holiday location near Saumur in the Loire Valley France for those with a sense of adventure and history. Wine tours only available if pre-booked.

The Manor House was once owned by the family Dupetit-Thouars, whose son Aristide was Admiral to Napoleon and was involved in the American War of Independance. Now it is home to Micaela and Sue and their three springer spaniels.

In the grounds of the house you will find an unusual underground pigeon tower, that once housed 1600 pigeons representing a 800 hectare wine estate at La Grande Maison in the 17th Century. Today the vineyards supply grapes to one of the leading sparkling wine houses of Saumur - Bouvet-Ladubay . Some of our Wine Tours incorporate a visit to this winery with its magnificent caves.

Sue and Micaela were so warm and welcoming. They struck the perfect balance of being there if we needed them while also providing the space and time to relax uninterrupted around the B&B. Their recommendations for must-see, lesser-known sights were right on. The accommodations were just as described and if they offer a dinner, take them up on it! They did a marvelous job both preparing a lovely meal and pairing each dish with different local wines. We highly recommend La Grande Maison for it's accommodations, it's hosts, and it's quiet location.

Even though we were an hour early we were able to check in and were offered a beverage to begin with. Either Macaela or Sue was always available for anything we needed. The buildings were absolutely amazing, including our room which was one time a bake oven. They also recommended some great choices for dining if you weren't going to participate in their own wonderful wine dinner experience. Cycling was great with lots of choices. Wish we lived closer to this unique getaway.
