The house is a very large Victorian just outside of downtown Berkeley. The location is ideal! You are close enough to walk to EVERYTHING, however still in a peaceful, safe neighborhood. It's an easy walk/bike ride to: the Berkeley campus, Alta Bates Medical Summit, bus and train (BART) service around the East Bay or into San Francisco (18 minute ride), every ethnic cuisine you could ask for, coffee houses, hiking, parks, nightlife, yoga/pilates/dance studios, salons, shopping, etc.
This room is spacious and bright (20ft x 11ft), and has a comfortable queen-sized bed, large closet, bureau, table and chair. It is perfect for visiting students, interns, or Bay-Area visitors as it is 3/4 of a mile from UC Berkeley Campus, 1/3 mile from Alta Bates Medical Summit, and a 15 minute walk to the Ashby BART station.
While the room has many operable windows, they all look directly into the house behind this house. For that reason there are light-filtering shades that are pulled from the bottom of the windowsill up. There is a line drawn to mark the lowest that the blinds can be pulled in order to preserve the privacy of this room and the house it looks into (this is not negotiable). While the shades cover the majority of the window, there is enough space at the top of the windows that you can still see trees and sky.
The room is downstairs where there is a full bathroom to be shared with a maximum of 3 people. There is also a lovely living room with full cable, premium channels included. The house is carpeted (shoes-off home), all the rooms have nice natural light, and the large downstairs kitchen is also well stocked with a welcoming table for enjoying meals if you wish to be social with others in the house. You will have your own kitchen cupboard and refrigerator space should you wish to keep groceries to cook/prepare food. There are two refrigerators, a washer/dryer for laundry, and wireless internet.
My house manager does a deep cleaning of all the common areas of the house each week, however beyond this, we do not offer maid service. Guests are responsible for the upkeep of their bedrooms during their stay. We hold our guests to a VERY high standard of cleanliness, and expect that no messes will ever be left behind in any common areas. Guests have been asked to leave for not upholding this standard.
A friendly effort to save everyone time:
The room is already discounted for weekly stays, and further discounted for monthly stays. The rent is firm and fair, you get what you pay for, and there are no exceptions. Thanks for respecting this!

Guests must be mature, clean, and respectful of the privacy and space of others. No heavy drinkers or drug users! We expect all guests to maintain the very high cleanliness standards of the common areas.
Due to challenges we have occasionally experienced with guest cleanliness and
compliance with other house rules, this is an admittedly ad-nauseam, step-by-step, lengthy, detailed description of what is expected of each guest if you are to stay in our home. Please understand that these rules are iron-clad and completely nonnegotiable, as any one guest not following these rules disrespects every other guest by degrading the environment they are renting space in. If you have any doubt that you can and will maintain these standards, please book elsewhere.
*You will be held responsible for all of the details in this email*, so please take
the time to read and absorb this information. Do Not Skim!! Be realistic
with yourself about your natural cleaning tendencies, and if this is a
stretch for you, DO NOT BOOK A ROOM WITH US. It will only lead to
discomfort for other guests you are disturbing, for we who have to do extra work in dealing with your non-compliance, and for you when you are charged
additional cleaning fees and made to find another place to stay.
Non-compliant guests will be removed from the house.

Okay, here come the MANY, MANY details… I am amazed to have to go into so many, but have found it necessary to make sure guests understand what we mean by “clean up after yourself.” We want you to have a lovely, clean environment to enjoy your stay in!
-This is a strictly shoes off home. That means you are expected to remove your
shoes immediately upon entry, and you can either leave them on the shoe
shelves at the front door or bring them to your bedroom. We will provide house
slippers (flip flops) for each room, which are only to be worn *inside the house,*
never outside. This protects the light colored carpet and maintains cleanliness
for everyone to protect against allergies, etc.
-Always lock the front door for everyone’s safety.
If you do not have time to thoroughly clean up after yourself, do not enter the
kitchen. What does this mean?
-If you use a dish, it must be thoroughly hand-washed, dried, and put back where
it belongs before you exit the kitchen. When you wash your dishes any food debris or mess made in or around the sink is to be cleaned as well, including water. Clean the sponge and wring it out so it is ready for the next guest.
-Only glassware and silverware is to go through the dishwasher. *Everything else is to be hand washed, dried and immediately put away*.
-Do not leave your food debris anywhere: the floor, the table, the counters, the
chairs, etc., wipe/sweep up all of your crumbs and leave the sponge clean for the next guest.
-If you cook on the stove or oven, you must *thoroughly* clean up any spills, slatters, oil, crumbs, debris of any sort from the oven, stove top, counters, floors after you cook *before you exit the kitchen*. Cooking with oil can spread the mess pretty far out; you must clean it ALL before exiting the kitchen or you are not welcomed to cook in the kitchen.
-When you throw trash or recycling away if anything falls on the floor, clean it
immediately. If the trash or recycling is full, please empty it into the receptacles
outside. Do not wait for the next person to do it; be respectful and pro-active in
maintaining a clean environment for yourself and everyone else.
-Please read the signs and follow the recycling instructions carefully.
-There is a hamper in the laundry room for dirty kitchen towels. Please throw any that are spent there and replace it with a new one from the drawer in the kitchen where they are kept.
-You are sharing a bathroom and need to leave it clean of all debris before
exiting the bathroom so the next guest has a clean space.
-When you use the toilet, if you miss in any way, clean it immediately. Sorry to
be graphic, but if you leave debris on or around the toilet anywhere, *clean it!!!*
-Always flush and put the toilet seat and lid down before you exit the bathroom.
-At the sink, always wipe down the counters and leave a clean sink and mirror
behind. Wipe up any water on the counter around the sink. We will provide
cleansers and paper towels on the sink to make this convenient.
-In the shower, make sure to rinse any debris from the shower walls, curtain and
floor, and clean any hair/debris from the drain *before exiting the shower.*
-Please dry yourself as much as possible in the shower. After you use the
bathmat, hang it to dry over the shower door/curtain hanger to dry. Wipe up all
water on the floor *before you exit the bathroom*.
- You will have color coded towels to identify which are yours. We prefer you
keep these in your bedroom, but if you are more comfortable keeping one in the bathroom, please only keep one there and make sure it is hung neatly.
-Please make sure you are present at the house while doing laundry to move
your items through efficiently and keep the facilities available for others.
-Do not do laundry before 8 am or after 9pm, as the sound is disturbing to the
bedroom closest to the laundry room.
-Clean lint trap before and after you use the dryer, throw away fabric softening sheets, cleanany mess/debris immediately.
-Same standards as all other areas!
-Clean your crumbs and clear any dishes immediately.
-Fold any blankets you have used and tidy up the space before exiting.
-Cable TV: DO NOT download more than 2 episodes of any show you wish to
record to the DVR or it will be immediately deleted. This results in increased
internet charges for us, slower speeds for others in the house, and overcrowding on the DVR. Delete what you have downloaded after watching it.
-You are solely responsible for maintaining your own bedroom while staying in
-Any excessive mess or damage to property upon checkout will be charged for
and removed from your security deposit.
-You will be provided with 2 keys for your bedroom: one to keep with you, and
one to hide somewhere in the house in case you lock yourself out. Please
understand this is not a hotel or 24-hour staffed house. If you lock yourself out of your room and have failed to stash your extra key, our ability to help you get back into your room will be entirely dependent on our availability.
-This room is for single occupancy only. It is extremely rare that
exceptions are made, as it is a priority for us to avoid over-crowding our guests.
You are welcome to ask if you have someone coming to visit, and if
I am able to make an exception, there will be a $20 per night charge. Unplanned for, unauthorized guests are never allowed to stay overnight in your
room, and guests who do not follow this policy will be asked to move out of the

Mary was the owner of this home until she passed peacefully in October 2013. She was a sweet, welcoming 95-year-old woman who loved having guests in her home and was extremely friendly and gracious. We continue her airbnb operation to keep her estate alive. Andrea, Mary's granddaughter, manages her affairs and is who you will be in contact with for arrangements.
