Parking on Calle San Sebastian and in most areas of Old San Juan is for residents only, with a sticker, and may result in a $250 fine.

Parking without a sticker is allowed during certain times and in certain areas. Read the signs on the street carefully before parking.

If you have a car, park in the safe, secure & well-priced Ballaja public parking, near the El Morro Fortress (few minutes walk from the house).

We have affectionately named this house Casa Zaguán. The original construction of this house is from the 1830s. The house has 7 total rooms, 2 of which are bedrooms. There are 3 full baths.

Casa Zaguán originally was two houses, and the area from the front door leading up to the statue (Hebe, the goddess of youth) and beyond to the courtyard was actually a caleta (small street) called Calle Zaguán.

The entrance to the left-hand house was where the double doors are on the left of the statue. The entrance to the right-hand house was where the kitchen counter is located, and you can see the outline of the doorway in the exposed brick wall.

These bricks were all made by hand and this construction is what you will find also beneath the black and white tile floor, which was the first installed floor in the structure. The arches were made by the Spaniards as was the entire house with small modifications.

The arch doorways with the carved woodwork atop are typical in this construction era and allow for the circulation of air. The wooden ceiling beams are also original and are made of eusebio, a natural wood of Puerto Rico.

The casita (sleeping quarters) was built at a later date. The casita is off of the courtyard, is air conditioned and has 2 separate rooms, each with its own full bath. There is no door, but there is a privacy curtain between the two rooms. One room has a king-size bed and the other has a full-size sofa bed. Additionally, there is a single bed inside the main house, off the dining room area.

Casa Zagúan has a beautiful courtyard, is tastefully furnished, and has lots of books and artwork by local artists. It is centrally located - short walking distance to two ancient forts, other historic sites and Old San Juan shopping and restaurants. All the books, CDs, DVDs are there for your enjoyment; please use gently and return to their original location.

Keep the front door locked at all times while you are inside the house, but please feel free to keep the wooden windows open (weather permitting) while you are inside. It helps to keep a nice breeze through the place.

Although Old San Juan is a generally safe and quiet neighborhood, please use common sense as you would in any tourist or city area.

You are welcome to use the air conditioners, but please be respectful and conservation-minded. Be aware that electricity is very expensive in Puerto Rico, averaging 20 cents per cents/kWh.

This is first and foremost a residential neighborhood. Be respectful of the neighbors (very nice people on both sides of you, who have lived in OSJ for many years) and keep the noise down, especially late at night or during the very early morning. You are welcome to have friends over to enjoy the house with you; however: unauthorized overnight guests are prohibited, as are any loud or drunken parties. These are grounds for immediate termination of your rental with no refund. Thanks in advance for your understanding, agreement & cooperation.

There is absolutely NO SMOKING of cigarettes or other tobacco products in the house or on the courtyard. If you choose to smoke cigarettes or other tobacco products, please do so outside of the house, well across the street and away from the house, and be sure to collect and properly dispose of any filters & other remains.

Be gentle with the plumbing! The water will work fine during your stay, providing hot & cold running water in the bathrooms & showers...provided that you understand that the plumbing in Old San Juan is very old and things can back up if the toilets are misused. What that means is: only use the toilet paper that is supplied. Other toilet papers may block the plumbing. Absolutely NEVER flush any hygienic (wipes, pads, etc.) or contraceptive products down the toilets!

Showers: Only 1 shower running at a time, please! Running more than 1 shower at a time will result in loss of water pressure and hot water availability. Hot water is supplied by an inline heater, in back of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Wash and put away any dishes/cups and take all garbage & recyclables out to the bins (on each side of the street, take your choice) on a regular basis during your stay. Clean up any obvious dirt or messes. When you leave, leave all sheets on the bed (you do not need to strip the bed) and towels anywhere in the bathroom, as you would in a hotel.

We booked Connies home for the 4th time for our Uncle and Aunt as they had a one day layover in San Juan. Connie was nice enough o allow a one day stay as well as a super late check out to accommodate their travel. Connie and her home are the best, as always. Here is what our Uncle and Aunt thought about their first stay at Connies " A lovely home situated in the center of everything! The courtyard is so cozy with the beautiful night sky above, hard to believe you are in a major city. Wish we could have stayed longer!"

If you want to stay at a place that really has the san juan feel, this place is perfect! It is beautiful and historic, and well taken care of. The gem of this place is the private courtyard, my family and I spent most of our time hanging out in this cozy space. The beds were very comfortable, and the air condition works wonderfully, although it's not always needed because the house opens up to the private courtyard, or you can open the doors to the street and enjoy the breeze. The hosts were extremely friendly and flexible with check in time which was wonderful, they were also helpful and attentive, overall a great experience!

The house is pretty good, which in the Old San Juan. You can walk to all of the historical sites and restaurants. The house is really beautiful and big enough which can contain about five to six people. However, it didn't have Wifi inside.

Respuesta de Connie:
I know we have all become accustomed to having wifi on demand everywhere and have come to expect it. The reason we don't have wifi at the house (it states this in the description) is because this is mostly a seasonal rental and it is not economically feasible to pay for wifi/cable year round. Rates would have to go up to justify wifi/cable service at the house. We regret and understand the inconvenience of not having wifi, but this also helps keep our rates lower. There are many free & secure wifi hotspots throughout Old San Juan.

Great hosts are very attentive to our questions and needs. The house feels like a wonderful "real" old San Juan house/experience. The street is very scenic and safe feeling and it is just a few blocks to everything Old San Juan has to offer. For the price of a hotel room you can experience a real old San Juan lifestyle walking everywhere as well as relaxing in your own private courtyard.
