The large veranda is the communal living space. The chameleon lounge constantly changes shape and color. There is space to do yoga. The kitchen is on the far side of the veranda and often time is a gathering place for friends to cook fusion food. The paddle pool brings relief from hot Zululand summers. It serves both as a splash pool and water reservoir for our permaculture garden. You can float on your back and look up to bananas and papayas, or the bright milky way.

El lugar

Our place is a Rural Family Home-stay. It is peaceful, remote and unique. There is lots of open space around to explore and you can take walks into pristine nature. We use creative building methods and materials. Life is simple and very rustic. There is no TV or WIFI. If you want, you can meet Zulu families or visit the community project that we are involved with.

Disponible para huéspedes

There are two bathrooms which are shared by everybody. One is inside the main house off the veranda, and has a shower and toilet. The shower water is solar heated, so it means you have to take your shower when the water is hot. The other is an outside bathroom with a composting toilet and a cold shower. Most of the year it is hot enough that you will not mind a cold shower. You will need to bring your own laptop with USB modem or smart phone if you want internet or computer access. We suggest you bring a hard drive with movies you want to watch or a good book.

Atención a los huéspedes

When you are here, you will find yourself in the midst of family life which includes friends that may be staying with us at the time. Everybody eats meals together and shares the veranda area, paddle pool and kitchen. Often there are visitors, plus garden work and other projects going on, so you won't feel alone! If you want to retreat and read (or write!) your book, you can easily do so. If you like to do exercise or yoga, say so, we might be keen to join you. We are always available to advise you on trips around the local beaches, game reserves and dive destinations.

I loved my stay with Ronell and Felix. They are warm, caring and considerate hosts and are passionate about their environment and community. The accommodation is rustic and rural and every effort has been made to create a green homestead. If you are looking for a getaway from the rat-race to get in touch with nature, experience rural Northern Natal living and a serene environment, this is a wonderful destination. There are lots of activities to participate in if you are looking for some excitement. Ronell is well aquatinted with the area and has lots of great suggestions for local activities. Ronell's staff are also very friendly and helpful and will make you feel most welcome. I went away for some nature time and lots of rest, and this destination was just perfect! I would highly recommend this destination to any nature and green-living loving folks.

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our stay there. It was quite difficult to get there. 15km of dirtroad. But our car made it. At Ronells place you will make a very special experience. And the hosting was very friendly. :)

My stay with Ronell and Charlie was amazing! First of all they are a loving welcoming couple who made my stay unforgettable. They know everythin there is to know about plants, birds, the area and how to make off the grid life fun and functional! The food, that is partly grown on the homestead, is amazing and we shared it under the full moon while listening to the sounds of the wilderness! The area is full of wildlife such as birds, hippos and beautiful acacia trees. The Indian Ocean, with its beaches and coral reeves, aswell as great nature reserves is within easy reach! The room and bed was comfortable and clean! I will be back and warmly recommend anyone looking for a Zulu off the grid experience to go and stay with Ronell and Charlie for a couple of nights! Thank you

Ronell and her family have created a unique and very special rural home stay experience. We had a very pleasant and relaxing night stay under the stars at her remote self sustaining home in off the grid rural Zululand. It was great to learn and experience rural living in sheltered and friendly environment. We were also treated to our own campsite and luxury bath area with a starry sky as our audience! The surrounding wilderness and views are breathtaking. During our very brief stay we managed to hike to Sibayi to experience the morning glory but unfortunately we did not see any hippos this time. Thanks so much for providing such a special ambiance and we only wish we could have stayed longer to have learned more and explored further the neighboring beauty. Thanks for all the fun, informative information and triangular buckets are amazing!

We really enjoyed staying at Ronell's place, interesting conversation and very good food. It was a shame Ronell was away so we did not have a chance to meet her but her husband Charley (professional tour guide) could not be more attentive and helpful. We are extremely grateful for the excellent travel advice including drawing a map so we can find the hippos (ticked off!;).The family's way of life is inspiring and we've learned a lot about sustainability, eco buildings (our accommodation -'the chapel' being a prime example) etc.The area is very beautiful and l wish we could have spent more than 1 night there and not to rush to Durban. Hopefully we will be back in SA one day and will definitely return to Ronell's place!

We had a soothing, peaceful and lovely stay at Ronell and Charlie's place in Zululand. Ronell really made us feel at home. Our room was comfortable and homey. We stayed up late every night sharing meals and many stories. Time stops in this home, so totally off the grid. The views of the surrounding land are breathtaking. We enjoyed a hike to Lake Sibaya less than an hour away where we could only hear the wind, the birds and...spotted hippos! We also took the opportunity to drive out to the nearby Isimangaliso Wetland Park. The "bush bath" in the midst of vegetation in Ronell's garden, in a very starry night, with water heated on the fire was a real treat. There is so much to enjoy and learn just by sitting in the yard: medicinal plants, energy saving techniques, sustainable life style, Zulu community rituals... If you are up for a real surprise, treat and adventure in the heart of the Zululand, we strongly recommend you stay with this lovely family.

We run Airbnb as a family.

Charley is a Ninja Twitcher Language Nut. That is he is is a fanatic birder who teaches Karate when he is home and fills every other second of the day by learning languages, editing photographs or watching movies. He is a Brittish Expat who is fluent in Japanese and Spanish, intermediate in French and Mandarin and dabbles in Thai and Afrikaans. If you come specifically because of his language skills, please lease with us so that we know he is not out globetrotting when you come.

I am a keen homesteader. I am interested in creating a sustainable life for us and the community around us in this way out setting. I love talking about permaculture, food security, new plans, future visions, homeschooling and how to grow the fledgeling NGO that I have founded. I am fluent in Afrikaans and English and am a beginner Zulu speaker.

Felix is a pre-school boy who loves running around the garden taking 'pictures' of butterflies and harvesting anything he can lay his hands on.
