This traditional Bali house is part of a multi-generational Balinese compound that is rarely experienced by visitors. You will be part of the vivid, gregarious and humble community life that is the REAL Bali. Wayan and her family will share their culture, traditions, history and religion with you in an open and humble way that is very, very special. You will become a part of their big and loving family. The compound houses 4 generations of Wayan’s husband’s family each in their own separate sections moving to the rhythm of their daily chores, interests and routines.

The family temple lies just beyond the garden of your mini house and is the center of the spiritual life of the family. Take part in the daily offerings or the larger ceremonies to appreciate the importance of rituals and ancestors. Pets and animals are a big part of the compound. In their own separate area in the back of the compound are the family’s livestock, chickens and pigs.

The rice terraces of Tegalalang lie to the back of the compound as do 2 rivers. Daily walks through the rice terraces at sunrise and sunset are incredibly beautiful as the herons wing their way to their roosting grounds in the next village over. Or join the village children as they splash about.

My family stayed here in Kas Komala for 2 months (two adults and three children). We loved the tropical indoor/outdoor living, where your living room and kitchen are covered, but are open to the outside. Only the bedrooms with bathrooms are enclosed. So, eating meals at the table or just lounging is full of fresh tropical breezes and a view of papaya, jackfruit, and coconut trees. When it rains, the smell that blows through is indescribable. We felt so connected to the elements and healthier than at home. Kas Komala is the upper floor of a family home. Downstairs lives Kadek, the young man that will help you find everything you need, like taxi and laundry services. When you live here, you are treated as part of the family, and you get a real taste of the daily life of Balinese people. Just adjacent to Kas Komala is the family's small farm. Every morning the grandma lights her open cook fire so it gets a little smoky, the roosters crow which you do get used to and even fond of, and the pigs are fed which can get quite loud, but our kids slept right through everything. The roosters continue most of the day, the tropical birdsong was amazing, huge butterflies visited the flowering trees, and at dusk you hear the Tokay gecko and the whirring of crickets. I loved the natural soundscape, and is woven into all of my memories of this place. One of my favorite things about Kas Komala was the small store and warung downstairs, near the front of the family compound. It gave us the opportunity to buy the papayas that we saw growing, the local vegetables, fruits, homemade tofu and Tempeh fresh that day, as well as other basics like toilet paper, water, milk, bread, coconut oil for cooking, and treats like candy or ice cream for the kids. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes to drive to Ubud, and costs about 150,000 rupiah for a round trip. There is a good warung or restaurant walking distance from home, and pizza delivery from Pizza Bagus.

Very nice place Very helpful people Real Bali home If you don't care about the 5:00 a.m rooster start crowing is ok. The place is beautiful the only problem is the location is far away from ubud . No taxi . Because we travel with kids is difficult for us if the place doesn't have good location. They offer you a driver he can drive you to ubud or the beach . Or wherever you want to go. The driver is not cheap but is convenient.

We felt very welcome by Wayan she was a great host and fed us food cooked with love. There is plenty of room to stretch out and make your self at home. She was very attentive to our needs regarding cleaning and transpiration every day. The neighborhood is a short drive from Ubud.

I can't say enough good things about our stay at Kas Komala, which lasted one month. Wayan, who handles the guests, was beyond friendly and helpful and she truly treated us like family. As someone who likes a quiet atmosphere, I was a bit worried that staying in a compound with a large Balinese family would be noisy but I barely heard anyone ever, and it still felt like a very private place. The family is lovely, and we were even invited to a wedding which was a very special experience. My birthday was during this time and they made me a cake and sung happy (URL HIDDEN) was very touching! The rooms are very clean, beds comfy, showers are nice and hot, kitchen equipped with what you need for cooking, a store right out front to buy snacks, drinks,etc.. and the internet connection was EXCELLENT...fast and never went down, which was important for us as we work online. Great (URL HIDDEN) authentic Balinese experience while still being a short motorbike ride to the center of Ubud. Jaques and Anita are super-helpful and friendly, and can help you with anything you may need. If you are looking to get a taste of Balinese life and want a more authentic Ubud experience, I highly recommend staying here.

We stayed our first four days here, and really wished we could have stayed longer. The rooms are on the 2nd floor at the back this family compound and were immaculately clean and tended to during our visit. The family is new to this type of service, but the family did a great job of taking care of us: they were warm and welcome, but not overly so. We felt comfortable enough to walk through the property and see their life unfold, but we could have just as easily not engaged with the family at all (some days we were too busy too!) and they would not have been offended. Jacques provided just the kind of support we wanted: a mail, text or quick drop-by to see how all was going or to answer questions, and nothing more. He struck me as someone who adjusts quickly to the needs of travelers as they come. He arranged motorcycles for us, and gave us some good advice regarding restaurants and scenic drives. His help — combined with the family's — made for an excellent stay. Breakfast was simple (fried rice/noodles or pancakes) but included and served with a smile. We also ordered out once after having Wayan arrange massages on the balcony. All well worth the money (a little cheaper than town). The surrounding roads are very scenic. I really wished we made more time to explore them before we moved on. The added benefit was that we were giving our money to a Balinese family , where those funds would help pay for a college education for one of the kids (Jacques's role is more as an English-speaking helper at the front-end). Our experience overall was incredibly positive, and we would definitely consider returning (we've already talked about it, actually), however, a few small things that perspective renters should be aware of: - the hot water is not consistent. this isn't a fancy resort, and so the shower can go suddenly cold and then hot again. This problem may have already been addressed. - this is a family compound, with it's own mini-farm behind it. The occasional whiff of "farm" does hit the nostrils while on the deck, but we never smelled it on the bedrooms. - where there's a farm, there are roosters. Many roosters. If you are a light sleeper who *also* sleeps in, this might be an issue for you. It wasn't for us (we wanted to be up at 7 or 8 every morning), but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention. All of these things seem so minor compared to our experience there. Highly recommended

Respuesta de Anita:
Thanks for being such great guests who can appreciate this type of experience. Wayan and the familly are extremely greatful that you selected Kas Komala of all the places you could have chosen in Ubud. I have raised the issue of the fluctuating hot water and they promise to look into it. Best regards, Jacques and Anita.

Beautiful balcony for enjoying the greenery and sky. Fun to watch birds, butterflies and an occasional firefly in the evenings. Ceiling fan for cooling the room, though mosquito netting blocks the air flow. Good size outdoor kitchen with fridge makes meal prep easy to do. Livestock on property, and the roosters don't care what time of day it is, they like to keep their hens in line with crowing. Fun to see chickens on top of the roof in the mornings. Quiet little town, about 15 minute drive into Ubud. Store out front has the basics and even ice cream when you need a 'fix.' Host family is very kind and warm to their guest, language barrier knows no limits when smiles are involved.
